  • This dose administration device allows each child to be given a dose exactly according to his or her weight.
  • the scale 3 has a built in safety feature.
  • the range of the scale 3 can be set so that the maximum dose shown would be insufficient to cause a dangerous overdose in an infant. In this case, with infant fluoride, the " margin of safety is about two times the correct dose. The smallest child using this dropper 1 probably would be a seven and ' a half pound child. The maximum dose on the scale 3 would be a dose for a fifteen pound child, which would not have any adverse consequences if it were given to a seven and a half pound child.
  • the range of scale 3 would be limited by this safety feature, and therefore to cover all patients, preferably there would be many droppers, each with a scale that covered a range of body weights where the dose for the highest body weight would be insufficient to cause a dangerous overdose for the lowest body weight.
  • any of the three variables could be changed. For example, to reduce the dose per weight by half: (1) the concentration of fluoride could be halved, for example, from .25 mg F/l ml to .125 mg F/l ml, (2) the capacity of the dropper could be halved, so that a full dropper dispensed, for example, .5 ml instead of 1 ml, or (3) the body weight marks could be doubled, for example, replacing a 10 pound mark with a 20 pound mark.
  • Designing the safety feature to limit accidental overdoses is achieved by first expressing the margin of safety as a multiple of the proper dose. The smallest body weight for the desired scale should then be multiplied by the margin of safety. The product would be the largest dose that could be safely marked as the largest body weight on the scale 3. This would limit the overdose potential to the margin of safety or less. For 8 example, if the desired margin of safety is twice the proper dose and the lowest desired body weight for the scale 3 is 7.5 pounds, 7.5 pounds multiplied by 2 is 15 pounds, therefore the largest body weight should be 15 pounds.
  • a further advantage of calibration by body weight is that there is less computation or use of dosage tables and therefore less opportunity for error.
  • This invention provides a way to dispense liquid medicines much more accurately than by volume. It also provides a way to incorporate a safety margin into a liquid dispenser 'to- avoid large overdoses. It further provides a way to reduce the opportunity for error that arises from using ⁇ dosage tables.
  • the invention is not limited in its application to the details of construction and arrange *m*ent of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, because the invention is capable of other embodiments,,- , and of being practiced or carried out in various ways.
  • the invention could be implemented using an oral syringe (Fig. 2), which would be particularly suitable for certain medicines, such as those for treating pinworms.
