Abstract

A spring system comprises an annular spring element (114, 118) made from a composite material, in which resilient fibres wound continuously into a coil are embedded in a matrix material. The fibres are preferably high-strength glass fibres or high-performance synthetic fibres. The external forces (F) acting on the spring system are reduced and deflected and act radially on the spring element (114, 118). As a result, the spring element is stretched in the peripheral direction together with the fibres. The force is reduced and deflected preferably by hydraulic means under high pressure. A special sealing system is provided for this purpose. An extremely high energy storage capacity per unit volume is achieved by the use of high-performance fibres and by optimal exploitation of the material as a result of the essentially predominant tensile stresses. The spring system is a general purpose system but can be used in special applications as a high-performance energy storage for clamping operations on rotating machine-tool spindles and as a spring for protecting structures from earthquakes.
