Abstract

The invention concerns a covering element (1) for the seats (12) and backs (13) of chairs, including armchairs. The new covering element is extremely simple to manufacture and correspondingly inexpensive. The covering element (1) consists of a helical spring (2) which acts as the core. Passing over the spring is a hose (11) made of rubber or flexible plastic. Screw hooks (3) are used to fix the covering element to the frame (9) of the chair. The threads of the screw hooks (3) are twisted into the ends of the springs (2), while the hooked ends (5) are inserted into bores (8) in the frame of the chair. Complete seats (12) and backs (13) are obtained by attaching an appropriate number of covering elements (1). The helical spring (2) and the hose (11) are standard semi-finished articles, while the screw hook (3) is a standard finished article. These components are extremely cheap and easy to obtain, thus ensuring that individual covering elements (1) are not only inexpensive to manufacture but also easy to repair by 'do-it-yourself' type methods.

Problem:Problem:
It is important for all chairs and armchairs that their seats and backrests adapt to the shape of the human body. This allows comfortable, fatigue-free sitting.
To date there has been no possibility of producing seats and backrests which on the one hand meet these requirements and on the other hand are as simple as possible in manufacture and therefore inexpensive.
Stand der Technik:State of the art:
In the simplest case, the known seats and backrests consist of appropriately cut and possibly curved wooden boards. To increase the seating comfort, a cover is stretched over it. This cover usually consists of a foam core made of foam specially made for seating and an associated covering made of natural or synthetic fabric (cloth, velor, genuine leather, imitation leather, synthetic fiber fabric, etc.).
More exclusive chairs and armchairs have seats made from relatively thick leather or from fine woods.
In contrast, chairs that are mass-produced in series, for example, garden chairs, seats and backrests made of colorful plastic cords, which are wound in a special way on the tubular frame of the chair. Other chairs manufactured in series have a one-piece plastic shell as a seating element is shaped so that the backrest is integrated into the shape. These chairs are particularly common in waiting rooms, lounges or libraries.
All known seats and backrests have the disadvantage that they are more or less complex to manufacture or require the use of special "know-how". The processing of wood, for example, requires a certain degree of manual skill and the production of one-piece plastic shells requires a minimum of knowledge about the processing of plastics. This has a negative impact on costs.
Another disadvantage is that this special skill is necessary for a possible repair. In the case of the leather covering or the plastic shell, if there is damage, there is no other option than to replace the entire part.
Lösung des Problems:The solution of the problem:
Es zeigen:The new covering element 1 impresses with its simple concept. Show it:

- Fig. 2: Stuhl mit Bespannungselementen- Fig. 2: chair with covering elements
- Fig. 3: Detailansicht B von Fig.2- Fig. 3: Detail view B of Fig.2
A coil spring 2 serves as the core (FIG. 1 a). In the relaxed state, this is approximately as long as the usable width of the seat surface 12 or backrest 13. A hook screw 3 is turned on both sides into the coil spring 2 (FIG. 1 a). The grooves 4 of the individual turns of the coil spring 2 serve as threads. The diameter of the thread 10 of the hook screw is selected so that the non-positive connection between spring 2 and screw 3 can absorb large forces. It is therefore excluded that the hook screw 3 is torn out of the coil spring 2 due to the load when sitting. The bent end of the hook 5 εchraube 3 (Fig. Lb) is so rebent that between the shaft 6 and the bent end 5, an angle of significantly less than 90 7 c ent stands. This angled end then acts as a barb. So that will prevents the covering element 1 from being simply pulled out of the bore 8 in the tubular frame 9 (FIG. 1 a). It is therefore possible to hold the chair on the covering elements 1 and to move or lift it. The assembly of the covering element is not prevented by this, one only has to bend the helical spring 2 with one hand so that the angled end 5 of the hook screw 3 can be inserted vertically into the bore 8 of the frame 9. A relatively thick-walled hose 11 made of rubber or flexible plastic is pushed over the helical spring 2, the inside diameter of which is slightly larger than the diameter of the helical spring 2. The hose 11 is at least as long as the helical spring 2. Of course, the hose 11 is pushed over the helical spring before the second hook screw 3 is attached. By mounting a corresponding number of covering elements 1 on the tubular frame 9, the actual seat surface 12 and backrest 13 are created (FIG. 2).
The advantages of the new covering element 1 are very diverse. The coil spring 2 and the hose 11 are standardized semi-finished products, the hook screw 3 is even a standardized finished product from mass production. The parts are therefore very cheap and also easily available. Together with the simple manufacture and assembly, this has a very favorable effect on the price of chairs and armchairs which are provided with the covering elements 1. Another advantage is that individual covering elements 1 can be repaired or replaced very easily in the event of damage, which everyone succeeds thanks to the simple concept. The rigidity of the backrests 12 and seat surfaces 13 made with the covering elements 1 described can be varied, depending on whether “hard” or “soft” coil springs 2 are used or whether more or fewer covering elements 1 are installed per seat surface or backrest. This makes it possible to produce ergonomically optimal chairs and armchairs; It has been proven that the lower part of the spine needs more support, which is why the lower area of the backrest is provided with stiffer covering elements. Thanks to the simple assembly of the covering elements 1, all creative possibilities are open to the creative furniture designer. For example, with black hoses 11 and a chair frame 9 made of chrome-plated tubular steel, a "techno-look" design is created which fits very well with tubular steel and smoked glass tables (design example: see FIG. 2). Such colored chairs and armchairs can be manufactured to match particularly unusual interiors by means of colored tubes 11 and tubular frames 9 sprayed in the same color. The chair frame can also be made of wood or other materials. The covering elements 1 can therefore be used anywhere: for chairs in the dining room or kitchen, living room or waiting room, street cafe or canteen, conference center or studio. For outdoor applications, it only remains to be taken into account that the coil springs 2 and the hook screws 3 may have to be made of rustproof material.
The new covering element 1 for seats and backrests is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture and can be easily repaired or replaced in the event of damage. In addition, thanks to the simple installation, it gives the furniture designer a free hand when creating chairs and armchairs. The simple concept in particular guarantees that chairs and armchairs with the covering elements described will often be found in the future.
