  • the present invention relates to conveyor drive chains.
  • Conveyor drive chains especially those used for bulk material as for example in various mining operations involve exposure of the drive chain to particularly severe operating conditions including exposure to contamination with extraneous particulate material such as coal dust in the case of coal mining machinery.
  • Conventional drive chains include a large number of bearing surfaces since each link in the chain is connected to neighbouring links by two pivot pins, and each of these bearing surfaces is exposed to ingress of foreign, more or less abrasive, matter and hence to wear resulting in loss of performance and eventual failure of the chain.
  • Such drive chains are moreover subjected to relatively high loadings and tensions and the wear and pin hole elongation which inevitably occurs with such known chains leads to rapid slackening of the chain and in turn to further problems as chain disengagement from drive spro ⁇ ckets etc., due to the limited stretch of the known chains.
  • a further problem that can arise with twin or parallel drive chains in the case of differential wear of the pins and/or bushes is that of loss of alignment of cross flights or paddles mounted across the chains, which are normally required to be maintained square with respect to the drive chains for proper entrainment of bulk material etc.
  • the present invention provides a conveyor drive chain comprising a plurality of chain links interconnected by pivot pin means, said links having bush means through which said pivot pin means extend, characterised in that said bush means are of a resiliently torsionally deform- able material and in that said pivot pin means are non- rotatably secured in said bush means, and said bush means are non-rotatably mounted in said links, whereby flexing of said chain may occur without relative rotation at the interface between the bush means and the pivot pin means by means of rotational deformation of said bush means.
  • the bushes may be made of any suitable resiliently torsionally deformable material including polymeric materials and especially natural or synthetic rubber.
  • the bushes may be non-rotatably secured to the link pins and to the chain links by any one or more of mechanical interlocking, interference fit therebetween, and by means of the use of suitable adhesives adapted for bonding between the bush material e.g. rubber and the pin material e.g. steel.
  • Any suitable form of mechanical interlocking may be employed including various non-circular section pins and bushes e.g. polygonal, including splined, as well as substantially circular but with a suitable keyway for insertion of a key between the pin and bush.
  • any suitable form of chain links may be used in a drive chain of the invention including on the one hand chain links which are all substantially similar and on the other hand alternating main links and connecting links. Also there may be used bushes at all the interfaces between links and pins, or only at some of them, with the pins being non-rotatably secured e.g. by clamping, welding etc., at the others.
  • conveyor drive chain including drive chains having flight bars and/or conveyor buckets connected thereto and systems having twin or parallel drive chains with flight bars or buckets connected thereto.
  • the present invention extends to a conveyor suitable for use in the conveying of bulk material and having a conveyor drive chain of the invention.

  • Fig. 1 shows a drive chain 1 comprising a plurality of main chain links 2 interconnected by connecting links 3 at each side 4 of the chain, the connecting links and main chain links being connected to each other by pivot pins 5.
  • the main chain links 2 each have a pair of generally cylindrical rubber bushes 6 through which extends a part cylindrical bore 7.
  • the pivot pins 5 are also substantially cylindrical with a flat 8 at one side so as to be a close fit within the bush bore 7 and be non-rotatably secured therein.
  • the outer cylindrical face 9 of the bush 6 (see Fig. 2) is secured to the inner cylindrical face 10 of a bush mounting bore 11 inside each end 12 of the main chain link 2 by a suitable adhesive so as to prevent relative rotation therebetween.
  • the connecting links 3 are in the form of closed loops 13 formed and arranged so as to define generally cylindr ⁇ ical bores 14 at each end for receiving respective ends 15 of pivot pins 5.
  • the generally ring shaped ends of the connecting links 3 defining the bores 14 are inter ⁇ connected by parallel spaced apart link portions 17 provided with a bore 18 through which can extend a clamping means in the form of a nut and bolt 19. As the nut and bolt are tightened, the members 17 are drawn together thereby reducing the diameter of the end bores 14 so as to clamp the pivot pin ends 15 securely in the link members 3.
  • the connecting links may be clamped to the pivot pins 5 with the links extending along the longitudinal axis of the chain in a substantially rectilinear disposition in the undeformed condition of the bushes or if preferred at a slight angle to each other so as to distribute the deformational stresses in the bushes 4 more evenly throughout the length of the chain 1.
  • the pivot pins 5 are provided with axially extending threaded studs 21 for securing of flight bars 22 thereto with the aid of suitable nuts 23 so as to form an elevator assembly 24 with a further drive chain 25 connected to the other ends 26 of the flight bars 22.

Abstract
