Definitions

  • This invention relates to a pipe formed of plastic material and having outwardly directed bulgings regularly distributed along the pipe, which is intended for use as soil sewage pipe, other waste pipe, cable conduit etc.
  • the invention also relates to an apparatus for manufacturing such a pipe.
  • plastic pipes for the aforesaid purpose normally are cylindric with a smooth inner surface. Their.wall thickness must be at least 3,5 mm for being capable to withstand the outside and inside loads, to which the pipe is subjected. A substantial amount of relatively expensive plastic material, therefore, is required for manufacturing such a pipe which, besides, thereby has a considerable weight.
  • corrugated pipes of conventional type would be used, the great number of wave crests and troughs per length unit would obstruct the water flow.
  • the present invention has the object to produce a plastic pipe, which is provided with bulgings and has a smaller wall thickness and a smaller number of bulgings per length unit, so that the consumption of plastic material and the weight of the pipe are lower than for conventional pipes for performing the same function, and through which pipe substantially the same water amount as through a pipe with smooth inner surface can pass.
  • Fig. 1 is an axial central section through a pipe according to the invention, of which pipe a central portion is cut away and Fig. 2 is a similar section through a modified pipe.
  • the pipe 1 shown in Fig. 1 is of plastic material of PVC-type and provided with outwardly directed bulgings 2, which are distributed regularly along the pipe length and extend all about the pipe.
  • the axial length a of the bulgings preferably is 0,5 times the inner diameter Dri of the pipe 1, as shown in Fig. 1, and the distance b, constituting a cylindric pipe portion 3, to the nearest located bulgings 2 has the same length as the axial length a of the bulgings.
  • the length of the bulgings 2, and therewith of the intermediate pipe portions can be 0,25 to 0,75 times the inner diameter Dri of the pipe 1.
  • the inner diameter Dvi of the bulgings preferably is 1,14 times the inner diameter Dri and can be 1,1 to 1,17 times said inner diameter. Said value preferably increases as the length of the buldings 2 increases.
  • a plastic pipe according to Fig. 1 with an inner diameter of 106 mm and a length of the bulgings 2 and intermediate portions 3 of 50 mm and with an inner diameter Dvi of 120 mm has a uniform wall thickness of 2 mm, i.e. 0,02 times the pipe inner diameter Dri at the pipe dimension primarily intended for use.
  • the ends of the pipe 1 terminate in a cylindric end portion 4 having the length c and the same outer diameter as the outer diameter of the pipe portions 3, so that a pair of pipes or more can be coupled together one after the other by a sleeve, jointing socket or the like or with a branch pipe etc.
  • the pipe 5 at its one end has a cylindrical end portion 6 similar to the cylindrical end portion 4 in Fig. 1.
  • the pipe 5 is formed with a cylindrical end socket 7 with a smaller bulging 8 near its outer end and intended to receive a sealing ring.
  • the inner diameter Dsi of the socket 7 is slightly larger than the outer diameter Dro of the cylindrical end portion 6 and the length of the socket 7 is slightly longer than the length of the end portion 6.
  • the pipes preferably are manufactured by an apparatus known in principle, which comprises two endless chain-like rows of mould trough halves, which extend together along a certain distance where the pipe is made, and which toward each other have a semi-cylindric inner surface with transverse grooves, so that when plastic mass of tubular shape is pressed or by vacuum sucked into the mould trough halves, a pipe with outwardly directed bulgings and intermediate pipe portion is manufactured.
  • the mould trough halves in addition to having alternating grooves and intermediate portions, have in one place a cy lindric portion between adjacent grooves, so that the cylindric pipe end port i ons 4 a re fo rmed at both ends of a p i pe .
  • the pipe embodiment described above has the advantage, that the wall thickness can be so small, owing to the reinforcement of the wall brought about by the bulgings. Said small thickness in its turn renders possible a reduction of plastic material consumption, i.e. a valuable material saving, which is of utmost importance when considering that the pipe in question is intended to have a considerable length, for example 5 m, and is to be transported and laid as a soil sewage pipe, other waste pipe, cable conduit or the like.
