Speeiiiretion nniing part of Letters Patent No. 17,602, dated vInno i6, 1857; Reissue No'. 501, dated September 29, 1857.
act description thereof', reference being hadv to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a skirt with the hoops inserted thereinr. 2. is Meenemen guru-with e spiral wound around it. Fig. 3'is a cord with two spirals Wound around itin contrary directions. Fig. 4 is a spiral without any cen- Heretofore the mode adopted in the present fashion of hooped skirts to set them ott' has ,been to form the hoops of whole-.bone in strips sential to beauty of costume; and when e dress' thus supported is acted upon h y the wind suoli hoops show conspicuously and inelegantly, besides which, in sitting down it is impossible with such hoops to gather the dress in, und by severe compression the hoops are heut orI broken so as to spoil their shape. v I eifectua'lly remedy these. defects by my improvements, and forni a light, pliable, elastic, and buoyant hoop, which has ull the necessary powers of extension for the purpose, and ut the same 'time un elasticity sind pliability not i'ound in hoops heretofore lfound in the market. y
The :nature of my invcntioneonsists in forniing hoops of spiral wire, strips of rattan, l e, or other suitable nate. nl, either tout the interior support oi' eord no any hind, which. hoops when insertn inndins' said shirts white the can be co|u 1 s 1 pressed. or lient short without serious iniury to their contigui-ation.

Thespirals in these figures are drawn somewhat separated, to show more clearly; but
they may be la d close together, and, ofanly desired diameter to suit the Wants of the public, The center ot' this hollow spiral may be filled with such material as shall be found con'- veuient; or it may be used Without any, although I deem the ccu ter support best'i'sothe spiral may he formed of one or more strands without chan ging the device.` l
When rattan strips are used, they aresteemed to softe-n them before forming, and after forming they are dried, which sets them .in place. To rende'r this cord thus formed waterproof', I 'saturate itwit/h a solution of gum-lac, which adds increased stiffness and durability and prevents the material becoming limher by wear.
Having thus fully set forth my new hoop for ladies skirts and the various modifications thereof and the manner of making thc saine, what I claim therein as new, and for which I desire to secure the exclusivcright, is-
