Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEETCE.
JAMES PEATFIELD AND SANFORD PEATFIELD, OF IPS\VIOH, MASS.
IMPROVEMENT IN ELASTIC BELTING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 27,471, dated March 13, 1?:60.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J AMES PEATFIELD and SANFORD PEATFIELD, of Ipswich, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the llllanufacture of Indiaiftubber Belting. of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.
India-rubber belting has heretofore been made upon a foundation of sail cloth or canvas, the article thus produced being almost entirely inelastic in the direction of its length. This inelasticity has been considered to be essential, as any considerable degree of elasticity in belting is objectionable. A slight degree of elasticity is, however, desirable, and this we obtain, in connectionwith the required strength, by the employment of a knit or netted fabric as the foundation of which the belting is made the elasticity being nearly taken out in the process of manufacture.
In carrying out our invention we take a Wide knitted fabric, and with a suitable number of layers we form the belting in a manner similar to that adapted for the manufacture of the ordinary india-rubber belting.
In the process of manufacture the goods are so stretched as to take nearly all the elasticity from the fabric, that the finished belt shall be but slightly elastic in the direction of its length. The degree of elasticity thus attained greatly improves the operation of the belt, e11- abling it to hug the pulleys without the necessity of employing a binder, as is often the case where a rigid inelastic belt is used.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent as a new article of manufacture, is
India-rubber belting made upon a knitted foundation, and having a slight degree of elasticity, as set forth.
