IMPROVED CHERRY-STOIER.
The Schedule referred-to iu these Letten Patent and making part of the nnte.
To all wlromlfit may concern:
Y .Bs it known that I, GEORGE Grasa, of Galesburg, in the coury of Knox and State of lllinois, have invented a new and improved Device for Stoning Cherries; and I do hereby declare that the following is n t'ull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being lng forming parl: of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side sectional view ot' my invention, taken in the line aga', fig-` 2.
Figure .l, a plan or top view of the saure.
. Similar lettcr's of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a. new and improved device for stoning cherries, that is to say,'taking the pits or stones from the cherries, 'leaving' the pulpy portion entirel or intact.
Thr,r object o." the invention is to obtain a device for the purpose specitied which will admit of the work rapidly than hy the ordinary hand process.
A represents a standard, the lower part of which is provided .with a lateral recess, b, anu a set-screw, B, the recess and screw-forming a clamp by which the device may be secured to the edge ot' the table or t-o any suitable fixture.y 'lhis will he fully'nnderstood by referring to fig. 1.
o represents a box or trough,4 slightly inclined l'r'onr l a horizontal plane, and having its lower or depressed end seemed to thc upper end of the standard A.
The elevated end otthe box or trough C is made ot' circular forfmhas shown at c, to serve as 'a recep. taule to hold a requisite quantity of cherries, and the portion of the box or trough below c is narrower, elevated than the bottom of c, having two longitudinal grooves, d d, made in it t'o conduct the cherries into cavities, e e, where they-arc operated' upon by mechanism hercinaiter described, holes f be of the box'or,
ing made entirelytlirongh the bottom trough in line with the cavities e e, as shown clearly in lig. 1.
'.lo the bottom of .the box or' trough. in line withA the holes f, there are ailxed pieces of leather', g, slittcd in the form of a cross, as shown clearly in'iig. 2. A single piece of leather may be used, withy two cross slits made in it, one underneath each hole j, and the as shown in tig. 1.
In the lower or depressed end of the box or troughl O there is titted, transversely, a. rock-shaft, D, which, has two cnrved arms, .E E, attached, the shape of which is clearly shown in tig. l.
The free or, disengaged ends of these arms E-E are forkeii, so as 'to have four prongs, r', sprcd or diverge l'ronr each other,
which slightly and these forked had to the accompanying draw` position hy a; plate, h,
I yends are allowed to work or pass through the holes f,
and the slits in the leather g, when the arms E E are operated or moved up and down.
The rock-shaft D is provided with a handle, F, for the con venicncc of working the arms E E.
G is a trough, placed transversely on C, in an in clined position, a t-ritle below' the recesses e e, and holes f, said trough having its lower end pmjecting a little ovcr or beyond the side of C.
H is an upright plate, secured in the box or trough C,- and extending np by the side ofthe trough G, the upper. end of said plate having two notches, h' la', made in it for' the arms E E to work through.
This plate H performstwo important frrrrctiorrs: it
`.ser'vcs as a. stop to linrit the downward movement oi' the arms E E, and also as a 'stripper to detach the itt-edor stoned cherriesfrom the prongs iut' the arms E, when the latter are raised or drawn npward.
The 'operation is 'as follows: ,The device, by means of the clamp, 1s secured to thctcdge of a table, or other suitable lixt-nre, a rcccp- .tacle being placed underneath the holes fto receive the'pits or stones, and a pan placed int-he lap of the `operator' to r'eccive the pitted or stoned cherries from the trough G. v T lre vessel containing the cherries to be operated upon is placed on the table near the elevated end ol' tire box or trough C, so that the hopper c may-bc readily supplied from time to time, as may be. required. The cherries, hy virtue of their' own gravity, aided occasionally by the lingers of the operator, pass down the grooves d d to the recess or cavities e e.
By pressing do'wrr the arms E E, the pronged ends i [mss through the cherries in c e, forcing the pits or stones ont therefrom, which fall into the yreceptacle 'prepared to receive tireur, and, in case a pit or stone should occasionally adhere to the prongs, it is stripped t'ret'rom by the leather q as thegarrns are drawn pwartl. w l
As the arms E E are drawn upward, the prongs i carry the stoned cherries with thcnr, and they arc stripped from the prongs bythe plate H, and drop into tho trough G, fronf'whencc they are discharged into the pan in the' lap of the operator.
I do not conline myself to any particular material in constructing the within-described device. lt may be composed ot`1slreet-metah malleable cast-iron, or nl' wood and iron combined.
Having tlrns fully described my invention,
W'hat I claim as new, and desire to socure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a cherry-stoner, composed of a piece of wire,"E, with four prongs, i, in its end, with -tl're storie-retainer,4 composed of the cavity e, hole f, and 'a flexible strip or strips, g, secured under said hole, all substantially for the purposes Setibrth.
2. The arrangement of the rock-shaft D, the hanalle or lever F, and the curved -arms or forks E E, made and arranged, and operating in the manner substantially as and for the purposes sut forth. 3. The upright'. plate H, for the combined purpose of arresting the downward stroke. of the plnngers and stripping the 'hrrres fiom the forks, made and nrranged substantizlllyas shown and described.
4. The combination of the trough G and grooves d d, with the arms E E, lever F, and plate H, all constructed and arranged to operate as herein described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, l have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of April, 1868.
GEO. GEER.
