Definitions
- This invention is an improved composition of matfor' roofing, which is of such'a nature that it will prevent the paper and its coating from cracking, and will forma fire-proof and water pr'oof covering forthe building.
- I first pnl'verize-tho slag by crushing it between rolls, and then runit'thr'ough a screen, to separate from it any impurities I boil the tar a short time, to take out the water from it. I then hoist them to the roof separately, and there mix them, to the consistency of mortar, after which, with a scraper prepared for the purpose, I spread the composition upon the common saturated roofing-paper, to the thickness of about one-quarter inch; and, while it is yet in a moist condition, I sprinkle upon it about one-eighth of an inch of the pulverized slag, in order to absorb all the tarthat-is yet in solution.
- composition takes so firm a hold of the 'paper that the boards on the composition on it, to the slightest degree, thereby avoidingthe mostnniversal as well as the worst of all faults in roofing-compounds.
- pine-tar, pitch, or any similar substance is a mere equivalent of coal-tar in this composition, answeriugthe same purpose, and operating in the same manner.

MOVED GOIIP OBI'I'IOH FOR ROOFING, FOR OTHER PURPOSES,-
.TheWalemmdtoinflluehettonrmntmdnfldngputdthnqm To all when a may coiwern Be it known that'I, BENJAMIN Srnrurms, of Wheeling, in the county of Ohio, and Stateof West Virginia,
have invented a new and improved Composition for Roofing and other Purposes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a fill], clear, and exact description of theconstrnctiou and oporation of the same-L Y This invention is an improved composition of matfor' roofing, which is of such'a nature that it will prevent the paper and its coating from cracking, and will forma fire-proof and water pr'oof covering forthe building.
The main ingredients of my improved composition 'areooal-tar and slag, from the boiling and heatingfurnaces of rolling-mills.
In preparing and applying my roofing-composition, I use the following process:
I first pnl'verize-tho slag by crushing it between rolls, and then runit'thr'ough a screen, to separate from it any impurities I boil the tar a short time, to take out the water from it.
When prepared and applied in this manner, it requires about one hundred and fifty pounds of the pultar, to cover one ve'r-ized slag to three; gallons of the square foetof roof.
It can be used to cover any form of roof, whether steep or fiat, operating to equal advantage on all.
which causes a rapid and complete absorption of all the tar, so as to form a hard, comphot coating npou the paper, which it is difilcnltto set on fire, and which is completely water-proof.
Another peculiarity of the composition is, that it takes so firm a hold of the 'paper that the boards on the composition on it, to the slightest degree, thereby avoidingthe mostnniversal as well as the worst of all faults in roofing-compounds.
' It is evident that pine-tar, pitch, or any similar substance, is a mere equivalent of coal-tar in this composition, answeriugthe same purpose, and operating in the same manner. a
It is also evident that the same composition may be profitably employed, not only for roofing, but also for the flooring of cellars, stables, blacksmith shops, 85c and for pavements, and other useful purposes, formpurposes, which is, under all circumstances, fire-proof. Having thus described my invention, v What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-'- and for the purposes described.
Witnesses: I BENJAMIN Invm B.'Wmon'r, N
L. M.- Hoses.
The great merit of this composition lies in the pe culiar qualities of, the slag, the porous character of which the latter is laid (no contract or expand, with out cracking or injuring the paper, or the coating of ing 'a hard, durable, and inexpensive material for said 'The compound, of coal-tar-and pnlveriaed slag,
