JOHN T. COU SE, 01? COCHRA'N, GEGRGIA.
ROOFING COMPOUND.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN T. Cousn, citizen of the-United States, residing at Cochran, in the county of Pulaski and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roofing Compounds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in waterproofing compounds for roofing or the like, and the invention has for its object an improved compound that is susceptible of being easily and cheaply prepared, and that is designed to be applied to a foundation or structural ply of felt or other roofing fabric, to provide a composition shingle to supersede the ordinary wooden shingle, and capable of withstanding the erosive effect of the weather. And a further object of the invention is an improved composition which is colored as desired,=so as to impart a pleasing effect to the shingle and effect a material economy in the time, labor and expense involved in painting the ordinary shingle.
In carrying out my invention, I prepare a mixture of the following ingredients which are combined in substantially the proportions specified, viz: sifted sand, 70 lbs; Portland cement, 25 lbs; graphite 10 lbs. These ingredients are agitated to effect the thorough mixture thereof. In order to impart the desired color to the compound, 5 lbs. of mineral pigment are added to the above mixture: This mixture is then introduced into and incorporated with 5 gallons of liquid asphaltum, sons to complete the preparation of the waterproofing compound which is initially of a plastic nature.
In the practical use of my improved compound for manufacturing shingles or the like, I .take a structural ply or foundation of felt' which is cut into the desired size and shape, and which is impregnated with the plastic compound, with the coating or layer of the compound on one or both sides of the ply, tapering toward one end of the same in more perfect imitation of the ordinary wooden shingle, and fora purpose that will be obvious. After exposure to the atmosphere for a certain period, the plastic coating'becomes very hard, so as to be capable, when the shingle is applied to the building, of withstanding the erosive efi'ect Specification of Letters Patent.

of the weather and the weight of snow or the like'accumulated upon the roof. The liquid asphaltum penetrates the fabric and renders the latter water proof, while the more as for instance, cloth, fibrous-board, perfo-rated metal, or screening, said structural ply being preferably provided with nail holes before the compound is applied thereto. Attention is also directed to the fact that this compound may be easily and cheaply manufactured; that it is entirely waterproof, and that the foundation ply may be impregnated therewith without the application of heat.
It has been found, after repeated experiments, that by combining the several ingredients in the specific proportions stated, a composition shingle or roofing slab is produced havin a hard exterior surface which is not a ected by the rays of the sun, and which will effectually withstand the deleterious action of the elements for an indefinite period without disintegrating.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. The herein described composition of JOHN T. COUSE.
