From the foregoing description, -it will be apparent that the invention provides a simple and durable filing machine or similar structure, which may be manufactured andoperated at minimum cost. The device vhas proven highly efficient in operation andfmay be conveniently manipulated to meet a great variety of operating conditions.
It should be understood that it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact details oi' construction and to the precise mode of operation herein shown and described, for various modications within the scopeoi the claims may occur to persons skilled in the art. I
Itis claimed and desired to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In combination, a series of files, a series of links supporting said illes, said links having overlapping ends provided with alined transverse openings of equal diameter, and pivot pins having medial portions of diameter substantially equal to that of said openings and having end portions of reduced diameter, said pins connecting the successive links of said series to provide an endless le carrier.
2. In combination, a series of iiles, a U-shapd link secured to each of said illes, other. links connecting the successive U-shaped links of said series, said other links-having ends disposed between the side walls ot the corresponding U- shaped links and having transverse openings of the same diameter as alined openings in said' sidel walls, and a pivot'pin disposed within each set oi said aiined openings, each of said pins having portions of reduced diameter coacting with said wall openings.
3. shaped connector links interposed between the successive carrier links and engageable with the ends of said nies, said nies projecting laterally a considerable distance beyond all of said U-shaped links, solid links plvotally connecting the adjacent ends oi' the successive U-shaped links and disposed between the side walls thereof, and a reversely U-shaped stationary guide having a longitudlnal recess through which said U-shaped links are successively movable and also having outwardly projecting longitudinal side 'iianges engageable directly with the rear of said projecting fue portions, the guide width across said nsnges being less than the corresponding fileV width.

In a tiling. machine the combination of a horizontal work table having a relatively small centrally disposed vertical passageway, a frame supporting said table, a plurality oi vertically spaced pulleys supported from said frame', a car'- rler guided on said pulleys i'or movement of a portion downwardly ln a straight' line path extending through said passageway, l'e elements iixed on the front oi' said carrier to provide a substantially continuous front filing surface in said path and'dened between two parallel spaced vertical planesgsaid carrier providing side bearing surfaces laterally spaced between said planes and at a distance substantially less than the plane spacing, and other guide means including means rigidly supported from said frame and supporting said carrier and illes against lateral dis'- placement within said straight line path portion, said guide means at a point within the working zone of said straight line path being of lateral width less than said spacing of said planes.

In a filing machine, the combination of a horizontal work table having a relatively small 'centrally disposed passageway, a frame supporting said table, a plurality of vertically spaced pulleys supported from said frame, a chain providing flexibly pivot-ed links and guided on said pulleys for movement of a chain portion downwardly in a straight line path extended through said opening, iile elements fixed on the adjacent links of said chain to provide a substantially continuous front filing surface in said path and defined between two parallel spaced vertical planes, said chain links providing side bearing surfaces laterally spaced between said planes and at a distance substantially less than the plane spacing, and other chain guide means rigidly supported from said frame land providing a channel shaped prtion within said straight line path portion and open in the direction of said file elements, the side members of said channel portion being of an outside width defined between said vertical planes, the front faces of each of said side members providingl bearings directly engaging the rear faces of said iile elements.
13. In a filing machine, the combination of a horizontal work table having a relatively -small centrally disposed passageway, a frame support-i,
stantially less than the plane spacing, and otherl guide means rigidly supported from said frame and providing a channel shaped portion within said straight line pa h portion and open in the direction of said le ele-ments', the side members of said channel portion being of an outside width defined -between 'said vertical planes, the front faces of each o f said side members providing bearings directly engaging the rear faces of said file elements.

In a filing machine the combination of'a frame, a plurality of vertically spaced pulleys supported from said frame, a horizontal work table iixed on said .frame at a level between said pulcondition, means normally continuously stretching said band during operation of the machine, the last mentioned means being adjustable to provide the slack necessary f or said element disengagement, and guide means preventing lateral displacement of saidilling surface in said path including a guide fixed with said frame and providing vertically disposed bearing surfaces, said guide being of a width no greater than the spacl ing of said vertical planes.

In afiling machine the combination of a frame, a horizontal work table supported from said frame, said frame providing a portion extended above and over said table, a plurality of pulleys supported from-said frame respectively above and below said table. a carrier guided on said pulleys for movement of a portion past ysaid table and in a straight line path forming a working zone, file elements supported from said carrier to provide a substantially continuous i'ling surface within said zone and dened between two spaced vertical planes. and means substantially completely enclosing said carrier and illes within said working zone except at points exposing said filing surface, said means including other guide means at the rear of said filing surface, and oi' a lateral width no greater than the spacing of said vertical planes.

In a filing machine the combination of a' frame including a pair of laterally spaced Yside members,a base for said frame, sheaves rotatably supported between said members, driving mechanism for said sheaves disposed between said members, an endless carrier movable by said sheaves between said members, files movable by said 'carrier along a definite path, a horizontal work supportI secured to said frame and providing a vertical opening, said carrier and file path passing downwardly through said opening, and guide Imeans restraining said carrier and illes against lateral .movement at the level of the upper surface of said support, said guide means at said level being of awldth no greater than the lateral width of the illes.

In a illing machine the combination of a frame, a "plurality of vertically spaced pulleys supported from said frame, a horizontal work table supported from said frame at a level between said pulleys and providing a vertical openy ing, a carrier guided on said pulleys for movelment of a portion downwardly through said opening in a straight line path, nie elements xed on said carrier to provide a substantially continuous filing surface in saidpath, and defined between two parallel spaced vertical planes, means adapting said carrier and illes for removal and replacement through said opening and through a work piece supported on said table including elements laterally disengageable when said carrier is in longitudinally unstretched condition, means normally continuously maintainin'g said carrier in stretched condition, and other guide means supporting said carrier and files against lateral displacement in said path at the level yof said table, said other guidemeans being of a' width no greater vthan thespacing of said planes.

In a filing machine the combination oi a frame, a plurality of vertically spaced pulleys supported from said frame, a horizontal work table supported from said frame at alevel between said pulleys and providing a vertical opening, a carrier guided on said pulleys for movement of a portion downwardly through said opening in a straight line path, le elements xed on said carrier to provide a substantially continuous illing surface in said path, and deilned between two parallel' spaced vertical planes, means adapting said carrier and les for removal and replacement through said opening and through a work piece supported on said table including elements laterally disengageable when saidlcarrier is inV longitudinally unstretched condition, means normally continuously maintaining said carrier in stretched condition, and otherv guide means supporting said carrier and les against lateral displacement in said path at the level of vsaid table,` said table being pivoted and said other guidev means,l being iixed with said frame to be stationary during pivotal table movement andoi' a width no greater than the spacing of said planes.
