Be it known that I, GYULO ARMENY, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, borough of Bronx, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Diamond-Cross-Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This inventionv relates to diamond-crosscutting machines; and the object of the invention is to provide a practical, convenient, and efficient machine for cutting across a diamond in a plane transverse to the naturalcleavage direction and by which any part of" the diamond, whether at the corner or facet, may be attacked by the cutter for starting the cut. v
The invention consists in the combination, in a diamond-cross-cutting machine, means for operating the same, a suitably-supported guide-rail arranged transversely to the cutting-disk, a traverseslide guided on said guide-rail, a feed-slide guided onthe traverseslide in aline transverse to the line of travel of the traverse-slide, a clutch-holding device mounted on the feed-slide, a pulley at the inner end of the traverse-slide, a weight, a cord connected with said weight and guided over said pulley, and means for connecting said cord at different points in its length with said feed-slide.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l isA a side elevation of a diamond-cross-cutting machine, showing my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. 4 is a section on line l 4, Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 5 is a detail section showing the ball-bearing for the cutter-disk. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the clutch, showing how a diamond is supported therein; and Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view showing a modified form of the cuttingdisk.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates the base-plate of the machine, provided with brackets d at each end, which carry at their upper ends boxes a', in which .is rigidly xed the shaft B for the cutting-disk C. In the main form of the invention the cutting-disk preferably consists of a very thi-n disk-shaped sheet of copper or phosphor-bronze, which is retained on thc hub C by means of clampingplates C2 C3 and by a screw-nut C4, which is screwed onto the screw-threaded end C5 of the hub C. Between the hub C and the shaft B antifriction-balls b are arranged so as to provide a ball-bearing to reduce the friction, thereby permitting the disk to turn rapidly with a minimum ofl friction. The hub C serves as a pulley over which a suitable driving belt or band may pass. In Fig. 7 a modification of the cutting-disk is shown applied to the hub, the same Aconsisting ot' a diskshaped body of porous soft iron provided with a cutting edge n and a thickened portion 'n' and having an internal screw-thread n2 for screwing directly onto the hub C. Extending around the lower, rear, and upper parts of the cutting-disk C is a curved guard-plate D, which is secured at its lower endrto a fixed pin d and which at its upper end is split to provide an ear d', which is secured to one of the boxes a at cl2.
Arranged upon the upper surface of the base-plate A is a foot-plate E, which is provided with a longitudinal slot e, that extends transversely to the stationary shaft b and through which passes a clamping-screw f, which xes the foot-plate adjustably to the base-plate A. Under the head of the clamping-screw f a washer f' is placed. At the forward end of the foot-plate E a socket-piece e' is formed, into one side of which is screwed a set-screw e2, which is adapted to bind upon the lower end of a short pedestal or post g, which is inserted into the socket e. The upper end of the pedestal g carries a fixedguide piece or rail G, which is arranged transversely to the plane of the cutting-disk C, and located in front of the same.
A traverse-slide H has preferably a dovetailed or equivalent connection with the guiderail G, so as to be guided thereon and to be adjustable across the plane of the cuttingdisk. The traverse slide is adjusted by means of a screw-spindle h, the ends of which turn in smooth bearings in the ends of the guide-rail G and which is provided beyond one end of the latter with a hand-wheel h or other suitable means of rotation, while the screw-threaded portion of the screw-spindle passes through a nut formed by an internallyscrew-threaded lug 7b2 on the under side of the traverse-slide H. and which receives a correspondingly-formed, preferably dovetailed, portion of a feed-slide I, which is adapted to support the stone-holding clutch J for feeding it to the cutting-disk.
The feed-slide I is moved toward the cutting-disk by means of a weight K, which is suspended by means of a cord or piece of catgut 7c, that is guided over an idler-pulley 7c', mounted in the inner end of the traverseslde H and extending through a groove or channel h4, formed longitudinally in the guide-rail h3 of the traverse-slide, and which cord is fixed to the feed-slide by means of a removable pin or peg fi, that is forced into a perforated kdownwardly-proJ'c-mting lug i at the forward end of the feed-slide and through which perforated lug the outer end of the cord 7c is passed.
The inner forward end ofthe feed-slide I is provided with means for holding theclutch J, and this means consists of a post L, which is provided at its lower end with an annular retaining-flange Z, which engages a rabbe'tgroove Z in the lowergend of an aperture l2 in the feed-slide I and upwardly through which aperture the said post L passes. The post L is provided with a transverse opening Z3, in which the head of the clutch J is set andretained by means of a binding-screw L', that passes through the upper end of the post and at its lower end bears upon the head of the clutch, so as to bind the same down upon the feed-slide I at opposite sides of the feed-slide In this way the binding-screw L" serves the double purpose of retaining the lclutch and also setting the post L in fixed position, so that the described clutch-holding device forms a very efficient and positive means for securing the clutch against movement. The means for guiding the traverseslide and the feed-slide are preferably formed of hardened steel, and. the guiding portions must be cut smooth and accurate, so that there will be no loose motion or wabbling of the parts, and these parts may be suitably formed and constructed so as to guide and retain the two slides in their set positions.
In operating the described diamond-crosscutting machine the diamond, such as S, is clamped in the clutch and retained so that it may be cut through and severed in a plane transverse to the planes of cleavage.
The clutch J is preferably constructed as shown and claimed in my copending application, Serial No. 47,310, filed February 14, 1901, the space between the-jaws being filled .with some suitable soft filling preferably lead, to prevent accumulation therein of the carbon powder or abradant used with my machine for assuring the cutting action of the cutter. The diamond S is so fixed in the clutch as to project sidewise therefrom. The footpiece E, the guide-rail G, and the traverseslide H are now set to the desired position, according to the point at which the cuttingdisk is to attack the diamond, whether it be at the girdle or at either side of 'the same. The feed-weight K is now fixed in position and set so that it will exert pressure on the feed-slide suflicient to gently force the diamond S against the edge of the cutting-disk C. The cutting-disk is lnow rapidly rotated by a suitable power-transmitting device, and the carbon particles or powder which are to assist the cutting action and render the same possible are fed in a suitable mannerto the edge of the cutting-disk, whereupon the cutting action takes place in a plane transverse to the planes of cleavage of the diamond, and after a sufficient time has elapsed the diamond will be severed.
The carbon particles or powder are mixed with suitable oil, as a vehicle, and iilledinto` a quill, from whichthe same is taken up by the edge oftherapidly-revolving cutting-disk.
The diamond-cross-cutting 'machine constructed as described and shown can be readily dismounted and the parts refitted or repaired, and there is no delicate mechanism thatis liable to reduce the efficiency of the machine, and the diamond may be severed thereby by attacking it from any point.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v l l. In adiamond-cross-cutting machine, the combination of a cutting-disk, means for operating the same, a suitably-supported guiderail arran ged transversely to the cutting-disk, a traverse-slide guided on said guide-rail, a feed-slide guided on the traverse-slide in a line transverse to the line of travel of the traverse-slide, a clutch-holdin g device mounted on the feed-slide, a pulley at the inner end of the traverse-slide, a cord connected therewith and guided over said pulley, a weight suspended from said cord and movable with the traverse-slide, and means for connecting said cord at diiferent points in its length with said feed-slide, substantially as set forth.V
2. In a diamond-cross-cutting machine, the combination of a cutting-disk, means for operating the same, aguide-railsupported transversely to the cutting-disk, a traverse-slide guided on said guide-rail and provided with a channel at its upper part, a feed-slide guided on the traverse-slide parallel with said channel, a clutch-holding device on the feed-slide, a pulley at the inner end of the traverse-slide in line with said channel, a cord connected with the rear end of said feed-slide, in line with said channel, and passing through the latter and over said pulley, and aweight suspended from Said cord and movable with said traverse-slide, substantially as set forth.
