To of( 'whom it ymay concern.'
Be it known that we. Alinari l?. H'ixwmzs and Connais lo'rrnn. citizens ot' the United States.y and now residing. respeitivellv. at Alliance., in the county ot Stark and State ot' Ohio, and at Boston, in the eonnty ot' Suffolk and State of Massaehusett's.y have invented eertain new and useful Improvements in Aeeonnt-ltegisterm and we do herelryv declare the followingr to he a full. clear. and exaet deseription oi the in vention.
The present invention relatesA to aeeount registers oi the type in which a nnnilier oi' frames earrying hill holders are pivotallv arranged on a hase so as' to he turned lilte the leaves of n hook, and one ohjeet ot' the invention is to so consti-net` the hase that the bottoms of the frames, which are more or less separated when the device is in use. ma)v he brought Close together when the deviee is not in use, so that the trainee niajv then forni a Compact group which may he more eonveniently stored in a safe or vault than with the ordinary eonstruetion.
Another object is to provide the device with improved hill holders adapted to permit the easy examination of the hills without` their removal from the holders. and to separate a portion Vot the hills in eaeh holder from the remainder.
A third object is to provide an improved construction of the pivote` and the pintles of the springs by which' the movements of the frames are controlled in order greater rigidity in these. parts and to permit the use of an improved form of spriiw` A fourth objeet ot' the invention is to pro vide an improved forni ot' index, and a fifth object is to reduce the friction resulting' from the relative movements ot' the leaves as they are swung from one position to another.
Other objects of the invention `\vill he noted in connection 'with the deseription ot' the illustrated embodiment thereof.
In the drawingsH-liigr'nre l is a sectional elevation of a complete aeeonnt reg-'ster einbodying the present invention. Fit. 2 is a front` elevation of a 2group ot trames removed froin the cabinet. Fig. 3 is a hot-tom view ofthe group of frames. Fig. i is a front elevation of the cabinet, with the frames removed and the index in position to serrure t Specification of Ressued Letters Patent.

Application for reissue filed Serial No. 477,254.
Fig. 5 is a detail plan view of a portion oi' the register showing the manner in which the sides ot the cabinet are hinged to the haelt. Fig. ti is a detail side elevation of one ot' the frame-hase supports. Fig. '7 a detail side eievation of one of the side catches.
The illustrated embodiment of, the inven tion eoniprises a Cabinet l in which the Frames are mounted when the device is in use. and a number of frames upon which the hill holders are mounted. AEaeli frame 2 is'prorided at its` lower corners with a eorner i piet-e it i-oaiprising integrally a. pivot 4Y and a spring4 pintle f exterding eti-axially in opposite direetions. The pivots are reeeived in aipturned ears C on independent hase hars i T. and eoil springs surround the Spring pimies` and engage the frames and the hase imi-s, so as to eounterhalanee the traine in the nsnai manner. The hase hars are oonneeted h v lazvtongs t) pivoted to them, and this ronstruetion permits the hase hars to have tree relative lateral movement, while it prevents the hars from beiner rotated hiv the springs and holds them in alinement.
As shown in Fig. 3, the frames are divided into three groups of three frames eaeh, which may he handled separately so that the handling of a large and heavyY body of 'trames is avoided. To prevent relative lon gitiidinal movement of the hase hars, and to liniit` their lateral movement, slides 'itl are riveted to the outside base hars ot' eaeh group and are slotted at il to reeeive studs ii) tixed on the middle hase bar. The studs slide i'reelvV in the slots, hat prevent longitudinal. movements of the frames. The v also assist the` lazv-tongfs in holdingr the hars in alineinelit.
rlhe cabinet l comprises a hase portion it provided with a hinged Cover if and aii'oriting spare tor the reeepltion ot` Chargeslip hloelts. eti.` a` liaelY ltj against Whit-h the upright Atrames rest when the device is in use. and tivo side pier-es 1T which are hinged to the hack lat their rear edges. The eahinet is provided with tivo inclined supports itl provided with suitably -spaeed notehes 20. When the frames are inserted in the eahinet the has hars are separated and are inserted in the uiotehe. so thaty the Supports 1.5i seri e not onl)Y to support the hase-hars and the trames, hiet also to space the hase hars prop-- safe or untill the base liars are pressed together. and the frames are thus brought to :i position in which they are all parallel and mit the frames to be swung on exaftly superrinsed, so that they forni u body ol' niinnuuu; hulk which een be stored in a sui-all space. position one ot the slides Il() is provided with u slot :51. which is eugzwed, when the frames ure in rinsed position, )y a springy eateh nuiuuted on ne utf the hase bars. The catch i.-; provided with a finger piece i225 hy whirh i; muy lle released when the frames are to be inserted in the Cabinet.
'the hustnt the rearniost group oi trames rt-:irwl in the rab'net hy a swinging latch pivuted to the back ol. the cabinet and @mingling the reurniost base bar. The other .groups nl trainee are Secured in place hy lwtmw: puniti! at 2T to the .Czupports lt? wringing the rearinost base liars of their .iulf-'O luiers.
rollers 29 are iournaled in the upper porv i tion *t engage the ribs n on the adjucent frames und separatithe frames sufliciently to prevent. rubbing between them. The rollers are grooved, so also to operate to resist relative lateral movements of the frames and thus ro stiten the groups of frames, especially when removed from theeabinet.
T he bill holders, as shown in Fig. 2 coinprise earh two spring wire clips, of which one, 3L is arranged to hold the bilis in place against the frame, with the exception of the right hand nuugin, while an auxiliary clip $52 engages the part of the bill left free by the other Clip. This arrangement ailords eonvenient' means for keepin track oi the daily business. The bills of t e current dav are inserted under the eli 31 only, .so that they are thus distinguishe from the bills ot Various days, which are inserted under the auxiliary eli) aise. As the margins of the hills containing the columns of tigures are telt` free by the clip 31. the bills for the day may be examined without removing them from the clip, by turning up these margins.
The inner surfaces of the sides 1T of the ruhinet are utilized to support the index.
und when the index is in use the sides are swung har-.k on their hinges, as shown in Fig. 4. When the sldes are 1n closed position, asin Fig. 5, they are retained by` spring-pressed catches 33 provided with rounded extremities 34 which are pressed 'tu .seein-e the base hars in this i w 1 ,l tese ateues may he swiui lun-h to release the bases by pressing i u.. earh alternate leaf` and these rollers upward. ln' springs 35, into eorreslmnding rrrrsses in the bottoms of the, sides.
An important advantage oi' the hinged construetion of the sides of the cabinet, apart from the use ot' the sides to support the index, resides in the fact that when the sides are swung back access to the rearmost. hill holders is facilitated, and the neressity of reaching into a Corner to gain arf-ess to the bills at the sides of the frames.` which arises in account registers ot this type as usually constructed is avoided.
Further prorisiun lnr the index is made hy an index traine 3? mounted to slide veriirally in a ret-ess in the bark nl the rabinet. Downwurd extensions H guidi this franux and u gpriny; $59 tends constantly to raise it into operaive position.` us ,shown in Fig. 4. dien the index is not in use it is pressed down into the rec-ess und l'etunu'ddhere In' l a springr 'utrli lll. lins Vlil nu the guides HS lin'lit the upward inorvinvnt il the index l'runie ln' engagement with sinn# l? on tlul raliinvt.
