Description

j ""fzBe it Iknown that I, WILLIAM vleveland, in thefStatc of Ohio, have invented l UNITED STATESl PATENT Orrur.
' IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINERY FoR MANUFACTURING comme, i
Specification forming part ol' Letters Patent No. 4,931, dated January 1U, i547; Reissue No. IHS. dated Septeinber25, 1560.
To all whom itmay concern certain new and usel'ul Improvements in Machinery for Manufacturing Cordage; and l do hereby declare that the following is al'ull,
' clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, 'making part ot' this specification, in which-'- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a inachine on my improved plan; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of the layingblock and con- (lensing-tube, and Fig. 3 a perspective view of the condensing-tube.
The same letters indicate like parts in all the figures.
The object ot' my said invention is to lay ropeA or cordage in such manner that it shall be smooth and even and with the strands under equal tension and twist, and at the same time obtain these results expeditiously, with thc view to economy in the manufacture.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a base-plate, on which are n'Iounted four standards, c c c c, which constitute the frame of the machine.V 'The spools carrying the strands are mounted in three tliers, N NVN, with their spindles at right angles .to the axes of the liicrs. rlhe lliers are all rotated in the saine direction and with equal velocity by a train of cog-whecls, M M M M, the tirst being on a horizontal shaft, L, receiving motion iii manner to bc presently described. By this rotation of the fliers N the fore twist is put into the strands as they pass tothe layingpart of the machine. Each spool is provided with a spring and friction hloclt, rl, to make friction, and thereby keep the strands under proper tension during the operation ot' putting in the fore twist. Each strand is delivered through the hollow nose of its ilie'r, and the three are brought together within a condensing-tube, K2, where they are -la-id into a. rope ot' the required size. The bore ot' this condensing-tube Inust be of a diameter equal to the intended diameter ofthe rope to be laid, and so as to make a gentle pressure upon the outer surface of all the strands. The receiving end of this tube is enlarged of a conical shape, and in l'ront 'thereot'isplaeed the layingblock J, of a corresponding form, so that the three strands shall be laid together between JosLiN, of I,
l thelayiugbloek and enlarged bore ot the con densingtube, and hence the three strands must be laid together evenly and smoothly to insure an even andsinooth rope'. The condensing-tube is represented as heine- 'placed within the hollow nose I ota large llier, ll, 'through which the laid rope is drawn, and i u' which it receives the required twist. The large tlier is mounted so as to be turned atthc required velocity, and in theaccompanying drawings a cranlehandle, l), is represented on the outer journal ot' this flier as a means ot` iniparting` Inotion to lthe ent-ire nn.\ehanisIn. The hollownose of this tlier carries a cogtion by a train ot' cog-wheels, l, to the beforc-describcd shaft L to driveV the three straiId-tliers N N N, by which the 'tore twist is given to thc strands. rlhc hollow nose el' the large tiier E passes through and turns. in a stationary cog-wheel, P, from which motion is given to a cog-wheel, llt, the arbor ot' which is mounted in the end ot' the Iller, so as to be carried planet-like around the stationary wheel l. The arbor ot' the wheel lt carries inside the iiiers a lwvel-pinion, S, which drives a bevel-wheel, T, on one end ot' the eapstan 1I, mounted in the ilier at right angles with its axis ot' rotation. 0n the shaft ot' this capstan l-l is Inounted a conical sleevedruni, B, which may be adjusted loi'Igitiidinally thereon relatively to a guide, Bf, and secured in place by a screw, b.
ot' the tiier ou one side ot' the guide l', and passes around the conical. drum, thence to the other side ot' the guide "l, and around theI conical druin to thespool F, and as the conical drum turns with its shalt, which always Inalies a positive nuInher of revolutions relatively to the lflier E, Vit follows that by shifting the conical drum so as to have a greater ora less diameter next to the guide 13', more or lcss rope willbe drawn through t'or a given ninnber of revolutions of the ther, and thereby vary the a-Inouut of twist. Y
The'eapstan carries a pulley at theend opposite the bevel cog-wheel, which pulley carries au elastic belt, X, to impart motion. to the arbor1 of a spool, F, also Inounted in the larger ier, for the purpose of windiin,l up the rope as it is delivered by the capstan. tion thereof,l I wish itvtobe understood t-h at I do not `limit my claim of invention to such mode of lapplication, as it may be greatly Varied without changing the principlel or mode of 'operation invented by me.
