Abstract
A distinct cultivar of Impatiens plant named Rock, characterized by its very large, rounded purple flowers; vigorous, freely branching and upright growth habit; medium green, non-variegated foliage; and broad leaves.
Description
The present invention relates to a new and distinctive cultivar of New Guinea impatiens, botanically known as Impatiens hawkeri, and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name Rock.
The new cultivar was developed by me in a controlled breeding program at Danziger -- "Dan" Flower Farm, Mishmar Hashiva, Israel, by crossing the female, or seed, parent identified as Impatiens hawkeri DAN 5-53 with the male, or pollen, parent identified as Impatiens hawkeri DAN 6-75. Both parents are nonpatented selections developed by me in a controlled breeding program and used only as breeding parents.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar by terminal cuttings taken by me at Mishmar Hashiva, Israel, has shown that the combination of features of this new Impatiens are firmly fixed and retained through successive generations of asexual reproduction.
The following characteristics are repeatedly observed and are determined to be the distinctive and unique characteristics of Rock. These characteristics in combination distinguish Rock from both its parent varieties and other cultivered New Guinea Impatiens used in the floriculture industry:
1. Very large, rounded purple flowers.
2. Vigorous, freely branching and upright growth habit.
3. Medium green, non-variegated foliage.
4. Broad leaves.
The new cultivar is most similar to the patented Impatiens hawkeri cultivar Samba (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 8,110). However Rock differs from Samba in its more purple flower color, larger and more round flowers, larger leaves, later flowering, and more round and compact plant form.
The accompanying colored photograph illustrates the overall appearance and flower color of the new cultivar, showing the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type. The flower color in the photograph is more red than the actual flower color. The photograph constitutes a top perspective view of a typical potted plant of Rock.
In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The following observations, measurements and comparisons describe plants grown in Mishmar Hashiva, Israel, under normal commercial practice in a polyethylene-covered greenhouse with minimum temperatures of 12° to 14° C. during the winter and maximum temperatures of 35° C. during the summer. Average light levels in the greenhouse is 40,000 lux. Rock has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary significantly with variations in environment such as temperature, light intensity and daylength.
