Abstract

A hybrid tea rose variety having tall, upright growth habit, buds whose opening is not impaired by cool weather in the spring season, red colored petals with defined yellow area at point of attachment, light fragrance and good resistance to rose powdery mildew.

Description

This present invention relates to a new and distinct variety of rose plant of the hybrid tea class which was originated by me by crossing an unnamed variety with the variety Proud Land, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 2,737.
The primary objective of this breeding was to produce a new rose variety combining the characteristics of vigor and color of both parents. This objective was substantially achieved along with other desirable improvements as evidenced by the following unique combination of characteristics which are outstanding in the new variety and which distinguish it from its parents, as well as from all other varieties of which I am aware:
1. Tall, upright habit of growth, with less spreading than Proud Land or Mr. Lincoln, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 2,370.
2. Opening of buds not impaired by cool weather in spring season as observed at Irvine, Calif.
3. Uniform red color near R.H.S. 46B except lighter shades on lower side of petals.
4. Pronounced, well defined area of yellow at point of attachment.
5. Light fragrance.
6. Good resistance to rose powdery mildew.
Asexual reproduction of this new variety by budding, as performed at Wasco, Calif., shows that the foregoing characteristics and distinctions come true to form and are established and transmitted through succeeding propagations.
The accompanying illustration shows typical specimens of the vegetative growth and flowers of this new variety in different stages of development, depicted in color as nearly true as it is reasonably possible to make the same in a color illustration of this character.
The following is a detailed description of my new rose cultivar with color in terminology in accordance with The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart except where ordinary dictionary significance of color is indicated.
