Abstract

A new and distinct cultivar of Lavandula angustifolia plant named ‘KERBEELIGHT’ is disclosed, characterized, by a compact, bushy plant, which is free flowering, with short peduncles. Flowers are light violet. The new variety is a Lavandula angustifolia, suitable for outdoor landscape and container use.

Description

Latin name of the genus and species: Lavandula angustifolia.
Variety denomination: ‘KERBEELIGHT’.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The new cultivar is the product of a planned breeding program under the direction of the inventors, David Kerley, Priscilla Kerley, Sarah Kerley, and Timothy Kerley, all citizens of the United Kingdom. The objective of the breeding program was to produce new Lavandula angustifolia cultivars for commercial ornamental purposes. During the Summer of 2013, the inventors performed an open-pollination consisting of 3 proprietary, unnamed, unpatented Lavandula angustifolia seedlings, and the unpatented Lavandula angustifolia ‘Hidcote’. This resulted in the selection of the new variety ‘Kerbeelight’ in July 2014. The breeding program and selection all took place at a commercial nursery in Cambridge, the United Kingdom.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘KERBEELIGHT’ was first performed in Cambridge, UK in August 2014 by terminal vegetative cuttings and has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The cultivar ‘KERBEELIGHT’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘KERBEELIGHT’ These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘KERBEELIGHT’ as a new and distinct Lavandula cultivar:
    • 1. Compact, bushy plants.
    • 2. Short peduncles.
    • 3. Free flowering.
    • 4. Light violet colored flower.
PARENTAL COMPARISON
Exact parents cannot be identified for comparison, as this was an open-pollination and seed was bulk collected. In general, the new variety is more compact and floriferous than the three proprietary varieties used in the mass pollination. The new variety is shorter and produces more flower spikes than ‘Hidcote’.
COMMERCIAL COMPARISON
Plants of the new cultivar ‘KERBEELIGHT’ are similar to plants of the unpatented variety Lavandula angustifolia ‘Little Lady’ in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘KERBEELIGHT’ differ in the following:
    • 1. The new variety is a shorter plant than this comparator.
    • 2. The new variety has fewer leaves per lateral branch than this comparator.
    • 3. The new variety has a longer internode length than this comparator.
    • 4. The new variety has a somewhat darker Violet flower color than this comparator.
    • 5. Plants of the new variety are not as dense as plants of this comparator.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘KERBEELIGHT’ are also similar to plants of the unpatented variety Lavandula angustifolia ‘Melissa Lilac’ in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘KERBEELIGHT’ differ in the following:
    • 1. The new variety has shorter, narrower leaves than this comparator.
    • 2. The new variety is a shorter plant than this comparator.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS
The accompanying photograph in FIG. 1 illustrates in full color a typical plant of ‘KERBEELIGHT’ grown outdoors in Cambridge, UK. The plant is approximately 1 year old shown in an approximately 10 inch pot.
FIG. 2 illustrates a close up view of a typical inflorescence.
FIG. 3 illustrates a comparison with the well-known commercial variety ‘Little Lady’. ‘KERBEELIGHT’ is the plant on the left side of the photo, ‘Little Lady’ is on the right.
The photographs were taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.
DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart 2007 except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.
