Abstract
A new Verbena plant named ‘VEAZ0021’ particularly distinguished by its large, purple-red and white, bi-colored inflorescences, dark green foliage, vigorous growth, and an outwardly spreading plant habit.
Description
Latin name of the genus and species of the plant claimed: Verbena hybrida.
Varietal denomination: ‘VEAZ0021’.
The present invention comprises a new Verbena, botanically known as Verbena hybrida, and hereinafter referred to by the variety name ‘VEAZ0021’.
‘VEAZ0021’ is a product of a planned breeding program. The new cultivar has large purple-red and white, bi-colored inflorescences, dark green foliage, divided leaves, and an outwardly spreading plant habit.
‘VEAZ0021’ originated from a hybridization made in July 2010 in a greenhouse in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands. The female parent was an unpatented proprietary plant designated ‘2153-2’, having purple-violet flower color and an upright, freely branching plant habit
The male parent of ‘VEAZ0021’ was an unpatented proprietary plant designated ‘M0128-1’, having purple-blue and white flower color and a compact trailing plant habit.
The resulting seed was sown in February 2011 in a greenhouse in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands. ‘VEAZ0021’ was selected as one flowering plant within the progeny of the stated cross in May 2011.
The first act of asexual reproduction of ‘VEAZ0021’ was accomplished when vegetative cuttings were propagated from the initial selection in June 2011 in a greenhouse in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands.
Horticultural examination of plants grown from cuttings of the plant initiated in the spring of 2012, and continuing thereafter, has demonstrated that the combination of characteristics as herein disclosed for ‘VEAZ0021’ are firmly fixed and are retained through successive generations of asexual reproduction.
‘VEAZ0021’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary significantly with variations in environment such as temperature, light intensity, and day length.
A Plant Breeder's Right for this cultivar was applied for in the Community Plant Variety Office on May 3, 2013 (2013/1234). ‘VEAZ0021’ has not been made publicly available more than one year prior to the filing of this application.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be basic characteristics of the new variety. The combination of these characteristics distinguishes this Verbena as a new and distinct variety.
The accompanying photographic drawings show typical flower and foliage characteristics of ‘VEAZ0021’, with colors being as true as possible with an illustration of this type.
The photographic drawing in FIG. 1 shows flowering plants of the new variety in baskets and in FIG. 2 a close-up of the inflorescence.
The plant descriptions and measurements were taken in Andijk, The Netherlands on Apr. 7, 2014 indoors in a greenhouse. The plants used were about 10 weeks of age and had been planted, 3 each, into hanging baskets of 25 cm diameter for later outdoor use.
The aforementioned photographs were taken on Apr. 7, 2014 in a greenhouse in Andijk, The Netherlands using the same plants as described above.
Color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart (R.H.S.) 2001.
