Abstract

A new Verbena plant named ‘VEAZ0042’ particularly distinguished by the its large purple red and light pink bicolored flowers, dark green foliage, and an upright plant habit.

Description

Latin name of the genus and species of the plant claimed: Verbena hybrida.
Varietal denomination: ‘VEAZ0042’.
BACKGROUND OF THE NEW PLANT
The present invention comprises a new Verbena, botanically known as Verbena hybrida, and hereinafter referred to by the variety name ‘VEAZ0042’.
‘VEAZ0042’ is a product of a planned breeding program. The new cultivar has large purple red and light pink bicolored flowers, dark green foliage, and an upright plant habit.
‘VEAZ0042’ originated from an open pollination which happened in July 2012 in the field in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands. The female parent is an unpatented proprietary plant designated ‘R0802-1’, having a red and white bicolored flower color and an upright plant habit
The male parent of ‘VEAZ0042’ is unknown because the female was pollinated by a pollen-cloud of all plants in that field.
The resulting seed was sown in February 2013 in a greenhouse in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands. ‘VEAZ0042’ was selected as one flowering plant within the progeny of the stated cross in May 2013.
The first act of asexual reproduction of ‘VEAZ0042’ was accomplished when vegetative cuttings were propagated from the initial selection in June 2013 in a greenhouse in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands.
BRIEF SUMMARY OF INVENTION
Horticultural examination of plants grown from cuttings of the plant initiated in the spring of 2013, and continuing thereafter, has demonstrated that the combination of characteristics as herein disclosed for ‘VEAZ0042’ are firmly fixed and are retained through successive generations of asexual reproduction.
‘VEAZ0042’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary significantly with variations in environment such as temperature, light intensity, and day length.
A Plant Breeder's Right for this cultivar was applied for in the European Union on Sep. 20, 2016, No. 2016/2278. ‘VEAZ0042’ has not been made publicly available prior to the effective filing date of this application, notwithstanding any disclosure that may have been made less than one year prior to the effective filing date of this application by the inventor or another who obtained ‘VEAZ0042’ directly from the inventor.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be basic characteristics of the new variety. The combination of these characteristics distinguishes this Verbena as a new and distinct variety.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS
The accompanying photographic drawings show typical flower and foliage characteristics of ‘VEAZ0042’ with colors being as true as possible with an illustration of this type.
The photographic drawing in FIG. 1 shows a close view of an inflorescence, and in FIG. 2 a whole flowering plant.
DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
The first plant description and measurements were made in Andijk, The Netherlands in late April 2017 using potted plants on benches in the greenhouse.
The aforementioned photographs were taken on April 2017 in Gilroy, Calif., USA. The same greenhouse plants were used, as described above.
Color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart (R.H.S.) 2001.
