Abstract
A new and distinct cultivar of Argyranthemum plant named ‘Supait339’, characterized by its compact, mounded, upright and outwardly spreading plant habit; freely branching habit, dense and bushy plants; freely flowering habit with numerous inflorescences per plant; anemone-type inflorescence form with white-colored ray florets and yellow-colored disc florets.
Description
Botanical classification/cultivar denomination: Argyranthemum frutescens cultivar Supait339.
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Argyranthemum plant, botanically known as Argyranthemum frutescens and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘Supait339’.
The new Argyranthemum is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the Inventor in Cobbitty, New South Wales, Australia. The objective of the program is to create and develop new compact Argyranthemum cultivars with numerous inflorescences, interesting inflorescence form, and attractive ray floret coloration.
The new Argyranthemum originated from a cross-pollination by the Inventor in September, 2000, of the Argyranthemum frutescens cultivar Summer Melody, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 11,763, as the female, or seed, parent, with the Argyranthemum frutescens cultivar Sam, not patented, as the male, or pollen, parent. The new Argyranthemum was discovered and selected by the Inventor as a plant within the progeny of the stated cross-pollination in a controlled environment in Cobbitty, New South Wales, Australia in September, 2001. The selection of the new Argyranthemum was based on its attractive inflorescence form and ray floret coloration.
Asexual reproduction of the new Argyranthemum by terminal cuttings taken in a controlled environment in Cobbitty, New South Wales, Australia since September, 2001, has shown that the unique features of this new Argyranthemum are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.
The new Argyranthemum has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature and light intensity without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following characteristics have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be basic characteristics of ‘Supait339’ and distinguish the new Argyranthemum as a new and distinct cultivar:
1. Compact, mounded, upright and outwardly spreading plant habit.
2. Freely branching habit, dense and bushy plants.
3. Freely flowering habit with numerous inflorescences per plant.
4. Anemone inflorescence form with white-colored ray florets and yellow-colored disc florets.
Plants of the new Argyranthemum differ from plants of the female parent, the cultivar Summer Melody, in inflorescence form and ray floret coloration as plants of the cultivar Summer Melody have double-type inflorescences and pink-colored ray florets. Plants of the new Argyranthemum differ from plants of the male parent, the cultivar Sam, in inflorescence form and ray floret coloration as plants of the cultivar Sam have daisy-type inflorescences and primrose-colored ray florets.
Plants of the new Argyranthemum differ from plants of the cultivar Supalav, disclosed in U.S. Plant patent application Ser. No. 10/818,517 and the cultivar Supamon, disclosed in U.S. Plant patent application Ser. No. 10/818,516, primarily in floret coloration. Plants of the new Argyranthemum differ from plants of the cultivar Supasat, disclosed in U.S. Plant patent application Ser. No. 10/818,494, in inflorescence form and floret coloration.
Plants of the new Argyranthemum can be compared to plants of the cultivar Summer Angel, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 11,085. In side-by-side comparisons conducted in Cobbitty, New South Wales, Australia, plants of the new Argyranthemum differed from plants of the cultivar Summer Angel in the following characteristics:
1. Plants of the new Argyranthemum were more compact than plants of the cultivar Summer Angel.
2. Plants of the new Argyranthemum and the cultivar Summer Angel differed in disc floret coloration as plants of the cultivar Summer Angel had white-colored disc florets.
3. Plants of the new Argyranthemum had shorter peduncles than plants of the cultivar Summer Angel.
The accompanying colored photographs illustrate the overall appearance of the new cultivar, showing the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type. Colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description which accurately describe the colors of the new Argyranthemum.
The photograph at the top of the sheet comprises a side perspective view of a typical flowering plant of ‘Supait339’ grown in a one-gallon container.
The photograph at the bottom of the sheet comprises a close-up view of inflorescences of ‘Supait339’.
The aforementioned photographs, following observations and averaged measurements describe plants grown in Encinitas, Calif., in an outdoor nursery under full sunlight during winter and spring with day temperatures about 15° C. and night temperatures about 10° C. Plants were grown for about 16 weeks when the photographs and description were taken. Plants were pinched one time about five weeks after planting. Color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 1995 Edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.

General appearance.—Inverted triangle; compact, mounded, upright and outwardly spreading plant form with dense foliage and inflorescences held above and beyond the foliage. Vigorous growth habit.
Plant height.—About 44 cm.
Plant width.—About 66 cm.
Lateral branch description.—Quantity per plant: About seven primary lateral branches; each with about seven or eight secondary lateral branches. Length: About 42 cm. Diameter: About 6 mm. Internode length: Vegetative stems, about 1.3 cm; flowering stems, about 1.8 cm. Aspect: Upright and outwardly spreading. Texture: Smooth, glabrous. Color: 144A.

Disease/pest resistance: Resistance to pathogens and pests common to Argyranthemums has not been observed on plants grown under commercial conditions.
Temperature/weather tolerance: Plants of the new Argyranthemum have been observed to be tolerant to rain, wind and to temperatures from −1 to 30° C.
