Abstract

A new plant variety of Chrysanthemum having medium yellow flowers with a maroon eye.

Description

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention is directed to a new and distinct variety of Chrysanthemum botanically classified as Dendranthema grandiflora. The varietal denomination of the new chrysanthemum is `Jose Sunset Lady.`
`Jose Sunset Lady` was discovered as a naturally occurring mutation on a single branch in a controlled cultivated planting of the variety `Sunset Lady`, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 8,924. The new variety has been asexually reproduced by vegetative cuttings in Ventura County, Calif. and the distinguishing characteristics are retained through successive generations of asexual reproduction.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
`Jose Sunset Lady` is a spray type pot forcing Chrysanthemum plant variety producing medium yellow flowers with a maroon eye and capable of being grown commercially in a greenhouse.
Comparison With Parent
In side-by-side comparisons of plants grown under the same conditions, the new variety achieves a height of about 29 cm compared to 25 cm for `Sunset Lady`. The new variety also differs in flower coloration from the parent inasmuch as the new variety shows a much stronger red-maroon eye than does `Sunset Lady`.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF ILLUSTRATIONS
The accompanying photographs show typical specimens of the new variety with colors being as nearly true as possible with illustrations of this type. One illustration shows, `Jose Sunset Lady` grown as a pinched pot mum and the other illustration is a close-up of the flowers.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PLANT
The following description of the new variety is of specimens grown in a greenhouse in Ventura County, Calif. in the month of October. `Jose Sunset Lady` has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary significantly with variations in the environment such as temperature, light intensity, day length and cultural conditions. Color values are taken from The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart.
Plants of the new variety have been grown successfully under temperature conditions averaging about 65° F. at night and about 75°-85° F. during the day under light conditions of about 5,000-6,000 foot candles. The plants respond well to use of growth retardant, such as one treatment of B-9 at about 2000 ppm. To produce a commercial product the plants may be pinched once with the center bud removed. It has been observed that the shelf life of `Jose Sunset Lady` is about 24 days with the response time of about 9 weeks.
