UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN L. BRITTIN, or DERBY, CONNECTICUT, AND EDWARD sono'rr, OF
BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
DESIGN FOR HANDLES OF TABLE-CUTLERY.
Specification forming part of Design No. 8,909, dated January 18,1876; application filed January 11, 1876.
[Term of Patent i years] CASE A.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, EDWIN L. Bsrr'rm, of Derby, county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, and EDWARD SGHOTT, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings and State of New York, have originated and designed a Pattern for Handles for TableOutlery, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents a face view of a spoon containing our design. Fig. Zis a rear view thereof.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
Our invention consists in ornamenting one side of the handle of articles of tablecntlery with the figure of a Ohinarnan hearing a yoke, from each end of which is suspended a hunch of game, and with a water-lily, the other side of the handle being ornamented with an ear of corn, whereby we impart a very handsome and distinguishing appearance to the article.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a spoon-handle, to which we have in this example shown our design applied, the handle being conjoined with a bowl, B. The front side of the handle is ornamented with a figure representing a Ghinaman bearing a yoke, from each end of which is suspended a bunch of game, as shown at U. The Ghinaman has a one or pig-tail, which is arranged to pass through a medallion, a, situated at the upper extremity of the handle. Said front side of the handle is further ornamented with a waterlily, D, and an escutcheon, E, the latter being formed at the junction of the handle with the bowl of a spoon or the prongs of a fork. Between the water-lily D and the escuteheon E are formed one or more transverse beads, G. The rear side of the handle contains the medallion a, an ear of corn, H, the heads G, and an ornamental escutchon, I.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The design for the handles of table-entlery, consisting of the figure of a Chinaman bearing a yoke, from each end of which is suspended a bunch of game, as shown and described.
2. The design for the handles of table-ontlery, consisting of a water-lily, D, as shown and described.
3. A design for the reverse side of spoon or fork handles, consisting of an ear of corn, H, as shown and described.
4. A design for spoon or fork handles consisting of the figure of a. China-man bearing a yoke, from each end of which is suspended a bunch of game, and a Water-lily, D, as shown and described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands and seals this 23d day of December, 1875.
