Description

DlZ-ZOQ. G D 79756 EX 1 W. A MLLES. Gar-Wheels. No. 7,756, Patented Sept. 15,1874.
Unrrnn- STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. MILES, OF GOPAKE IRON- URKS, NEW YORK.
DESlGN FOR CAR-WHEEL.
Specification forming part of Design No. 7,756, dated September 15, 1674; application filed August 5, 1874. [Term of Patent 14 years] To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. MILES, of Gopake Iron-VVorks, Columbia county, State of New York, have invented and produced a new and original Design or shape of an article of m an nfacture known as aRailway-CarVVheel, which design has not heretofore been known or used; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and clear description of the same.
The accompanying drawing fully represents the nature of my design.
Figure 1 is a cross-section of in y Wheel, showing the shape of the raised. ribs; and Fig. 2, a view of one side or face of the wheel on which the radial ribs or undulations are formed.
A represents the tire or tread oi the wheel, having a flange, B, and within the circumference of the tread or tire are the elliptical holes 0 0, and between each of these holes are formed the radial ribs or undulations D D, running to the center or hob, and tapering from the middle toward their central and outer ends. Between each of these ribs, and opposite each of the holes G 0 are formed the smaller ribs or undulations it E, which taper from the inner side of the holes 0 to the center or hub of the wheel.
The wheel may be made with a single or double plate, and the ribs are formed opposite each other, so that both sides have the same configuration or design.
I am aware that railway-oar wheels have been formed with holes in the plate, and I do not claim acar-Wheel formed with holes in the plate merely; but the distinctive character of my design consists in the arrangement and grouping together of the radial ribs and corresponding elliptical holes.
I have shown eight holes, and a corresponding number of one long and one short rib to each hole, but do not limit myself to this or any number of holes so long asthe general design is carried out.
What 1 claim as my invention is- The design for a car-wheel,e1nbraeing a series of ribs, D and E, and a corresponding number of holes, C, and the hub, tire, and flange, substantially as set forth.
WILLIAM A. MILES.
