J. FUWL. WHEEL FOB TRUCKS, BASKETS, &c. (Application led Nov. 3, 1900.)
(In Rodel.)
UNITED STATES PATENT EETCE,
JLIUs FowL, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
WHEEL FOR TRUCKS, BASKETS, 86C.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 674,577, dated May 21, 1901.
Application filed November 3.1900. Serial No. 35,398. (No modell To LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, .IULIUS FOWL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Im provements in Wheels for Trucks, Baskets, dac.; and I do declare Vthe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the. accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked'thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to wheels for trucks and baskets,&c. ,and has for one object to produce a noiseless Wheel of this character that will not become loose in its parts through use;
and a further object is to produce a wheel of this character that can be readily assembled Without the use of tools, and with these and minor objects my invention consists in parts and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set out.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a central vertical section of a wheel constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of two parts of the wheel in elevation. Figs. 3 and 4 are side elevations of the respective parts shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of my improved wheel.
lrepresents one member of the Wheel, having an enlarged central portion 2, through which is formed an opening or bearing to form a box for the axle upon which the wheel is adapted to be mounted.
3 is an oil-duct formed in the enlarged portion 2, leading into the axle-box.
4 is an annular ange extending at right angles from and integral with the member l, the inner face of which is provided with suitable screw-threads.
5 is an annular outwardly-extending flange integral with the member 1, the flange being undercut, as at 6.
7 is the other member of the Wheel,'having an enlarged portion S similar to the enlarged portion 2 of the memberl and an outwardlyextending integral annular flange 9 undercut, as at 10, which, with the undercut 6 on the other member of the wheel when the parts are assembled, forms a wedge-shaped annular groove around the wheel.
11 is an inwardly-extending annular iiange, from which extends a similar flange l2, provided on its outer face with suitable screwthreads adapted to intermesh with the screwthreads on the flange 4 of the member 1.
Each of the members 1 and 2 is provided with the opening 12, adapted to register with each other when said members are assembled, and 14 is a locking-key adapted to pass through both of the openings 13, thereby locking the members l and 7 securely together against rotation upon each other. 15 is a rubber or other noisless tire, which is placed between two members of the Wheel before said members are entirely secured together.
It will be noticed in Fig. 1 that the enlarged portions 2 and 8 abut when the members are assembled.
To assemble the wheel, the rubber tire is first placed upon one or the other of the members, preferablyon the member 2, whereupon thev member 7 is screwed to the member 2, and revolved so that the screw-threads on the respective iianges 4 and 12 draw the members rmly together, thus rigidly clamping the rubber tire 15 between the undercut annular flanges 5 and 9, as shown in Fig. 5, whereby the said tire is pre vented from creeping. As soon as the parts are thus assembled the locking-key 14 is slipped through the openings 12 in the respective members, thus securing the members against rotation upon each other.
The construction of this Wheel is so simple that any one can assemble it Without tools, and a further advantage of its simplicity is that the parts are interchangeable and the tire is, by reason of the annular inwardlyprojecting ianges 4 and l1, given a rm tread or base.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. -A wheel of the character described, comprising one member having an inwardly-extending annular ange provided with screwthreads on its inner face, and an annular peripheral flange and a second member having an inwardly-extending annular flange, from which extends a second annular iange, screw- IOO threaded on its outer face, a peripheral annular ange, and a rubber or other noiseless tire Screwed between Said peripheral annular flanges.
2. A Wheel of the eharacterdeseribed, comprising one member having an inwardly-extending annular flange, provided with screwthreads on its inner face, a peripheral undercut flange and a central enlarged portion in which is formed an axle box or bearing and a second member comprisingan inwardlyextending flange, an inwardly-extending annular flange integral with the flange just named, an enlarged Central portion in which is formed an axle boX' or bearing and an annular undercut ange,a rubber or other noiseless tire secured between said undercut anges, openings in both of said members adapted t0 register when the parts are assembled and a looking-key adapted to pass through both of said openings.
In testimony whereofl affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JULIUS FOWL.
