UNITED STATES IATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL A. MCCARTHY, OF UTICA, NEW YORK.
DESIGN FOR A HAIR-PIN.
Application filed April 21, 1911.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL A. MCCARTHY, of the city of Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented a new, original, and ornamental Design for Hair-Pins, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof.
The drawing illustrates a symmetrical hairpin of substantially a U shape, adapted to be either molded or stamped from sheet metal. Each of the arms is provided with longitudinally spaced enlargements 10 on the inner and outer sides, arranged in staggered relation, and somewhat approximating serrations, although not sharply pointed, and the inner short sides 11 are not undercut, but inclined outwardly slightly and intersect the outer sides 12 at an oblique angle. There are two enlargements on each side of each arm, as shown, the inner ones beginning nearest the points 13 of the pin. The sides 12 of the innermost enlargements terminate at the bases of the inner sides 11 of the outermost enlargements, and the outer sides of the latter are so related as to form properly tapered points. Each of the arms Specification for Design.

is slightly flattened, and the device is preferably slightly curved toward one side, as customary in hair pins.
The device may be pressed from plastic material as well as produced in the other ways mentioned, and in any event should be finished with all angles smoothly rounded. The enlargements on the inner and outer sides cooperate when engaged in the hair to prevent casual. dislodgment of the pin, and yet the objection of ungainliness and undue breadth is avoided by the arrangement of the enlargements in staggered relation. Thus, if they were in registry or parallel, the arms would be greatly thickened between the apices. The weight and apparent breadth of the arms are thereby also much less than would be the case if there were like enlargements on one side of the arms only.
I claim:
The ornamental design for a hairpin, as
shown.
