UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BERNE NADALL, OF KINGSTON-UPON-THAMES, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE LINOTYPE COMPANY, LIMITED, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
DESIGN FOR A FONT OF TYPE ORNAMENTS SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 35,812, dated March 1 1, 1902.
Application filed January 25,1902. Serial No. 91,294. Term ofpatent 14 years.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNE NADALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kingstonupon-Thames, in the county of Surrey, England, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Font of Type Ornaments, of which the following is a specification.
My design is clearly shown in the accompanying typograghical impressions, the types composing the font being numbered 1 and 2.
The main feature of the design illustrated in each of the types composing the font is that it consists of a series of entwined leafed stems arranged to produce an ornament of substantially square form, the lines representing the stems being heavy solid lines, while the leaves are represented in outline only by fine lines. A cluster of such leaflike forms composes the center of the design about which the heavy stem-lines form an inclosure. The free ends of said stem-lines are so interwoven as to provide a substantially circular inclosure about the central group or cluster of'leaf forms, and within the spaces included between said circular inclosure and the outer ends of the stem-lines are arranged other leaf-like forms.
The contrasting heavy and light lines rep resenting the stem and leaf forms assist to produce a very effective and ornamental design.
The forms numbered 1 and 2 differ only in that one is the reverse of the other. For instance, the stem-line extending inward from the upper right-hand corner of one form is the counterpart of the line extending inward from the upper left-hand corner of the other form. In other words, each form may be considered as the negative ofthe other.
The several type ornaments herein described are of uniform design and are adapted to be grouped in various Ways to form borders and other composite typographic ornaments.
Having thus described my invention, what In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnessses.
BERNE NADALL.
