DESIGN FOR A BACK FOR BRUSHES OR SIMILAR ARTICLES,

SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 31,736, dated October 31, 1899.

Be it known that I, FRANK l-I. LA PIERRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented and produced a new and originalDesign forBacks forBrushes or Similar Articles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a plan view of a brush-back of my new design; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same on line 00, Fig. 1.

As shown in the accompanying drawings, the leading feature of my design consists in a back for brushes, mirrors, or similar articles ornamented by opposite pairs of long scrolls facing one another, small heavy scrolls arranged transversely between the members of each opposite pair of long scrolls, and floral groups disposed at the opposite ends of the pairs of scrolls, all said parts being raised in 7 bold relief on the back.

In said drawings, a indicates the body portion of a brush-back of my new design. Upon the said body portion are arranged opposite pairs of long scrolls c 0, extending longitudinally of the brush and having their concavities toward one another. I Said scrolls are raised upon the back and inclose a central open field cl. Between the adjacent ends of the members of each pair of long scrolls is a short heavy scroll e, transversely disposed with reference to the long scrolls c, and also raised upon the brush-back, as shown in Fig. 2. At the opposite ends of the pairs of long scrolls c c, and thus at opposite parts of the back, are arranged large groups f of flowers and leaves, and the space outside of the scrolls c and between the floral groups f and transverse scrolls e is ornamented with scrolls and conventionalized leaves or flowers.

\Vhat I claim as new is- The design for a back for brushes or similar articles, as herein shown and described.
