[312-111. OR D 301820 E DESIGN.
No. 30,820. Patanted May l6, I899. 0. W. SCHAUM.
BICYCLE FRAME.
AppUcl-fln 810d yr. 17, 1899.)
WITNESSES: INVENTOR ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OTTO W. SCHAUM, \OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DESIGN FOR A BlCYCLE-FRAM E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 30,820, dated May 16, 1899.
Application filed April 17, 1899. Serial No. 713,410. Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, OTTO W. SCHAUM, acitizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and original Design for Bicycle- Frames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein in two views I have illustrated the design which'my bicycle-frame embodies.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of my bicycle-frame, and Fig. 2 is a top plan view of that portion of the frame which includes the combined gear-casings and cran k-hanger and the rods connected thereto.
The essential feature of my design consists in a substantially trapezoidal-shaped bicycleframe whose top bar is its longest one and which frame is traversed by other bars connecting the ends of the lower bars of said frame which are parallel to said top bar with substantially the middle of the latter.
It further consists in the peculiar shape of the combined gear-casings and lower bars.
The longest side of the frame includes rods a I), connected by a compound joint 0, while the opposing side is substantially parallel to said longest side and comprises a pair of substantially parallel sections of frame-tubing d e, both connected at their forward ends to a combined gear-casin g and crank-hanger f and at their rear ends to compound gear-casings g. The combined crank-hanger and gear-casin g f comprises a tubular portion f and two geareasings h h, disposed at the respective ends of said tubular portion, and the adjoining ends of the rods d e are connected thereto through the medium of two conical enlargements 12 t", the former of which is adjacent to the gear-casing h and is the smaller one.
The rear forks j of the frame are connected at their upper ends to the rear end of the rod b by a joint], while their lower ends are connected to the rear ends of the rods d e by joints k and short curved rods k.
The head I of the frame comprises a short rod m, connected to the rod (1 by a joint m and to a rod n, that projects forwardly and upwardly from the tubular portion f, by a joint m. The rod 0 connects the compound joint 0 and the tubular portion, and a pair of other rods 0 connect said compound joint 0 with the joint It. An elongated rear handlebar socketp extends parallel to the rod 0 and is connected at its upper end to the compound jointcand at its lower end to the rod 0 through a brace q.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The design for a bicycle-frame substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of April, 1899.
OTTO W. SCHAUM.
