J. H. SWIHART.
FACE PLATE FOR SCALES.
No. 27,627. Patented Sept. 7,1897.

UNITED STATES .lU]l.\' HENRY S\YIHART, ()l" CLEVELAND, ()llIO, ASSIUXOR TO llllu PATENT OFFICE.
NATIONAL COMPUTING SCALE ('OMIANY, (ll- SAME PLACE.
DESlGN FOR A FACE-PLATE FOR SCALES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 27,627, dated September 7, 1897.
Application filed ne 7,1897. Serial No. 641.202. Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN HENRY SWIHART, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Face-Plates for Computing-Scales, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a face-plate constructed in accordance with my new design. Fig. '2 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
The leading features of my design consist of a circular plate having at or near its circumference an arc-shaped opening, and hav ing also, extending outward from a point at or near its center and joining with the arcshapcd opening, between the ends thereof, but nearer to one end thereof than the other, a second opening having one straight edge which is radial or parallel to a radius, which opening is of increasing width from its inner end outward a short distance and is of equal width for the remainder of its length.
Referring to the parts by letters, A represents the circular plate; 15, the arc-shaped opening near the circumference of said plate, which opening extends a little more than onetenth of the circumference, and C represents the other opening, which extends from a point at or near the center of the plate outward to the arc-shaped opening, with which it unites at a point between the ends thereof, but nearer to one end than the other. One edge e of this opening, which is the reading edge thereof, is straight and radial, or parallel with a radius, while the other edge, in the outer part c of its length, is parallel with the edge 0, and in it sinner part c is inclined away from edge c, from its inner end to the point where it unites with the part c.
in use this plate is preferably placed in such position that its opening G is substantially vertical and below the center, and that side of the plate is turned outward which will bring the long end I) of the arc-shaped opening B to the left of the opening C.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The design for a face-plate for computingscales, as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN HENRY S\\"IllAR'l.
