DlZ-A.
DESIGN.
o L. J. COX. METALLIC TRUCK FRAME.
No. 27,431. Patented July 27, 1897.
Inventor.
Witnesses UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LFHVIS J. COX, OF TERRE IIAUTE, INDIANA.
DESIGN FOR A METALLlC'TRUCK-FRAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 27,431, dated July 27, 1897. Application filed une 14, 1897. Serial No. 640,783. Term of patent 14 years.
To (LN 1071 on). it m/q (Io/warm:
Be it known that I, LEWIS J. COX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Terre Ilaute, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented and produced a new and orginal Design for Metallic 'lruck-Frames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof.
The drawing is a perspective view of a metallic truck-frame, showing my design.
The side frames A of the truck are beams having a vertical web a and projecting flanges a along the upper and lower edges, which are straight and parallel. At each end of each side frame the web a is cut out in part, the opening having an upright straight inner edge a and a straight upper edge a a short distance below the upper flange a and parallel therewith. These edges meet in a circular curve a of small radius, say one and a half inches. The lower edge of the opening is defined by the flat straight flange a of the beam, whichis left intact. Along the upper and inner edges of these openings are secured angle-irons 13, having one flange b riveted to the web of the beam and the other flange b projecting at right angles therefrom. The anglc-ir0ns are curved at b to correspond with the curve a. These an gle-irons lie both inside and outside of the side frames. An upright bolt C passes through the flange b of one angle-iron near the outer end of the opening in the side frame and extends down through the extending bottom flange a in a line par allel with the inner edge a of the opening.
The two side frames are parallel with each other and are connected by two parallel transoms I), each composed of a beam having a web (Z and the upper and lower flanges d, projecting outwardly. The transoms have straight parallel upper and lower edges, the upper edges being in the plane of the upper edge of the side frame A and the lower edge being somewhat above the lower edges of the side frames. The transoms abut against the side frames near their middle and are secured thereto by right-angled an gle-irons E, riveted to the webs of the side frames and of the .transonis.
A gusset or brace-plate F is riveted upon each side frame and the adjacent ends of the transoms. The inner and outer edges ff of each gusset are parallel, but the inner edge f is the shorterof the two, the ends being cut on abevel atf from the points at or near where the edge f crosses the outer edge of the upper flanges d of the transoms to the points at or near where the ends of the gusset cross the inner edge of the upper flange a. of the side frame.
An upright right-angled angle-iron G is riveted to the inside of each transom with its projecting flange g in line with the inner edge f of the gusset.
Near each end of the transoms, just inside these upright angle-irons G, is a U-shaped piece of metal H, having two upright flanges h, which are riveted to the webs of the transoms, and a substantially flat bottom whose width is equal to the space between the transoms.
Having thus described my invention, what. I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The design for a metallic truck-frame, substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEWIS J. COX.
Witnesses GEORGE S. Cox, W. H. \VELLER.
