AARON T. DEMAREST,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DESIGN FOR A CARRIAGE-BODY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 21,773, dated August 9, 1892. Application filed J 11110 23, 1892. Serial No. 437.778. Term of patent 7 years.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AARON T. DEMAREST, acitizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Carriage-Body, of which the following is a full,- clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a carriage the body of which embodies the features of my design, and Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof.
The design relates to the contour and decoration of the bodies of coaches or carriages of what is known as the coupe class, and the main feature of the design consists in the sweep or curvature of the lines of the body at the margins and between the margins as viewed from the side and as particularly shown in Fig. 1.
What may be termed minor features of the design consistin the ornamentation at the back of the body (shown in Fig. 2) and the annexed ornament to the body, located at the rear and shown in both Figs. 1 and 2.
With reference to the lines of the body, the front side lines a are carried downward from the top to a point near the bottom of the body in a graceful decided curve, the concavity of the lines facing forward, and the lines appear double, giving to this portion of the body a bead-like or embossed effect. The front lines a join with upper parallel straight lines a, having the same bead-like 0r embossed effect, and above these lines a plain scroll figure a is arranged, curving at its ends over the front lines a and also over rear parallel and curved lines a the sweep of the lines a and their arrangement being the same as the front lines a; but they are oppositely presented, their concave faces being in direction of the rear. The lines a and u connect at their lower ends with compound curved side lines a, and these in their turn merge into lower centrally-located slightly-curved lines a All of the lines a, a, a a a, and a have an embossed or rib-like appearance, and when viewed collectively they present to the eye a panel A, approximating somewhat in shape the contour of a shield of more than ordinary length for its width. The shield-panel A is divided above its center by transverselinesb, arranged to produce a paneled or ribbed efiect, and these lines appear to merge into both of the side lines a and (L The lines I) are duplicated by lines 1), extending from the rear side marginal line a of the shield-panel to the rear of the body, at which point they merge into rear body-lines b and these lines are curved from a somewhat arched top I) forwardly and downwardly, but forwardly only to a slight degree for the major portion of the length of the lines; but near their lower ends the lines present a decidedly curved appearance and sweep downward to a connection with the panel A, imparting to the rear bottom portion of the body a finely-rounded contour, and the upper portion of the body appears to slightly overhang at the front and rear.
\Vithin the upper portion of the shield-like panel casement-like panels B are arranged, while in the lower portion of the shield-panel A a panel B is located, the upper portion of which is somewhat square and the lower portion more or less rounded off at the corners.
At the rear of the body a panel C is made to appear, which is seemingly somewhat square; but at its central upper portion the lines of the panel drop downward with more or less spear-like effect.
Projecting rearwardly from the under portion of the body at the side are the arm-like figures (l, which terminate at their outer ends in upwardly-curved fanciful heads (1. The arms apparently support a double scroll figure d, which figures seem to connect the back portion of the body with the outer extremities of the arms, and the scrolls also surround the head figures cl. \Vhen these annexed ornamentations are viewed from the back, a connecting-bar d of fanciful and ornamental appearance extends from arm to arm.
I claim- The design foracarriage-body,herein shown and described.
AARON T. DEMAREST.
