Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN L. POPE, OFULEVELAND, OHIO.
DESIGN FOR A HARNESS-BIT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 13,551, dated January 30, 1883.
Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN L. POPE, of Cleveland, in the county of (Juyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Harness-Bits, of which the following isaspecitication, reference being had to the accompanying photograph, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to a novel design for the loopsand cheek-piecesof harness-bits; and it consists in certain features of configuration and ornamentation, which will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
In the accompanying photographs, Figure 1 shows a view of a half-cheek bit, and Fig. 2 a view of a full-cheek bit, both of which have my design applied.
Like letters of reference in the two views designate like parts.
A is the bit proper, and B B the loops or rein-rings. The cheek-pieces are made fancy and are castintegral with the loop For convenieuceot' description, I shall assume these cheek-pieces to be made of two parts, 0 and D. The part (J is the smaller of the two and adjoinstheloop. From its solid neck portion extend two curved bars, 0 c, and one intermediate Y-shaped or bifurcated bar, 0, the rtfect of which arrangement is the formation of three openings, plain on visual inspection. The part D is composed essentially of two substantially semicircular bars, a a, and two other substantially semicircular bars, 0 0, the latter small in size and located within the space formed by the bars a. a, and running into the latter where they join the part 0. The ringlike figures formed by the bars a a and 0 0 have the appearance of being arranged eccentrically to each other. The outer portion of the inner ring-like figure is connected by two shortpieces to theexteriorfignre, which at this point (about on a line with its center) is drawn out, as it were, forming a triangularly-shaped opening small in size. At the extremity of the cheekpiece is a little curved projection, not really essential to my novel design, and between the barso 0 there is also an ornamental piece running longitudinally of the figures.
My invention may be used in either a. snaffle-bit or bar-bit and in a full'cheek or a haltcheek bi t. 7
What I therefore claim as new, and desire to secure by Design Letters Patent, is-
1. A harness-bit provided with cheek-pieces of substantially the configuration and design shown.
5. The check-pieces of a harness-bit, composed of two parts, 0 and D, of substantially the contour shown and described.
3. The cheek-pieces ot' a harness-bit, composed of two parts, U and D, presenting openings between the bars substantially like those shown and described.
In witness whercofl have hereunto set my hand this 3d day of November, 1882.
WALTER A. RIDDLE, GEORGE F. EBERHARD.
