DESIGN.
H. H. PAINE CHAIR.
Patented Nov. 14, 1882.
m n L v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY II. PAINE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DESIGN FOR A CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 13,405, dated November 14, 188?,
Application filed July 3, i882. Term of patent it years.
To 111 l whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY l1. PAINE, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Design for Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has reference to designs for chairs; and it consists in providing the usual bow or back, which is made round in cross-section, and back-rods at or close to the tops thereof, with a thin sheet or layer of wood or other equivalent material, said layer or sheet being preferably perforated for ornamentation, all of which is more fully set forth hereinafter, and shown in the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to greatly improve thedesigu ofthe common bow-back chair,
' in which the cross-section of said how isround,
so that itshall bemore attractive and command a better pricein the market. These chairs, when placed about a table-as, for instance, a diningroom table-produce a good effect, as the tops alone show.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chair embodying my improvement,
' and Fig. 2 is a cross-section through part of the back on line as w of Fig. 1.
A is the usual round bow, and is made fast to the seat-frame U in the ordinary way. The seat D should be made of perforated wood to correspond with my improved back E; but this is not necessary. B are the vertical rods or rounds, secured between the top or bend of the bow A and the seat-frame 0. So farthe chair is as has been constructed heretofore.
The upper part or bend of the bow A is flattened on the front side, as at H, and therounds B are also flattened for a couple of inches below their tops, as shown at b, and to these fiattened surfaces of the bow and rounds the perforated wood or other equivalent plate E is secured by ornamental nails F and G, the former being driven into the bow and the latter into the rounds.
I prefer to curve the bottom ofplateE to improve the design; but, if desired, it may be made perfectly straight. The plate is curved or bent in to fit against the rounds, and those spaces between said rounds and hetwecnthem and the bow may be ornamented by suitable perforations, 6. By making the chair seat and back to match the effect is far superiorto that when they are made different. The nails Gr through the back E into the rounds are close to the bottom of the plate or back. as in practice it is only at this place that the plate E rests against the said rounds.
The depth of the plate may be varied, and also its ornamentation, my invention com prehending broadly the design when such a plate is arranged on the upper part ot'the bow and rounds, leaving the lower parts of same exposed.
Having now desclihcd my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The improved design for common roundbow-back chairs, consisting in the upper part of the bow and rounds provided with a sheet of suitable material, as wood, bent to conform to the curvature of said bow-back and rounds, leaving the rounds between said sheet and seat exposed, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The improved design for common roundbow-back chairs, consisting in the upper part of the bow and rounds provided with perforated wooden platcs or sheets, substantially as shown and described.
3. Theiniproved design for chairs,wl1ich consists in the seat-frame with perforated wood seat and the back with a round bow, and a perforated wooden plate or sheet secu red to said bow near its top, substantially as shown.
4. The improved design for chair-backs,which consists of the round bow A, rounds B, curved perforated back-piece E, secured to said how and rounds by ornamental nails F G, substantially as shown.
In testimony of which invention 1 hereunto set my hand.
HENRY H. PAINE.
