Vanimij UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
lMPHOVEMENT lN APPARATUS FOR HEATING FEED-WATER FOR LOCOMOTlVE-ENGINES.
'..\.i5(ri.-n of Additional Improvement No. l3`0, dated December 1l, 1355, foi-min;A .lrt of Letters Pntent No. 113,270, dated July 17, 1855. f
To a/ whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that I, DAVID MATTHEW, of the city of Philadelphia, in the State ot` Pennsylvania, did obtain Let-ters Patent ot' the United ltates, bearing date July 17, 1855, for an [mproveinent in Apparatus for Heating Feed- Water to Locomotive ,Steam Engines to be 5 used in the Smoke-Box of such Locomotivei Engines; and whereas [have invented new und useful improvements to said apparatus, I do hereby declare that the -Following is n. clear l and exact description of the constructionand operation of said improvements, referencebef ing had to the annexed drawings, making a y part ot' this speciticatiou, in which- Figure l is u view ot vertical section. Fig. 2 is a view of cones and bars to which they are attached removed from tubes. .Fig 3 is i a side -view of water-heating tubes. Fig. -t is i a top view of the pipe-rings which the t'uhcs :are attached to, which form its top and bottom, with the bottom part removed, and to which the feed-pipes are attached.
Like letters in diterenttignres refer to like parts.
Fiist, the nature of my improvement is in i making tubular i'ee(l-\vater heater round and extending it up into the chimney the whole length ot' the said chimney, (see Fig. 1;) secondly, in the arrangcmentoi sectional cones )I up in the chimney B, so that the said cones are detlctiug the current of gases andsteam out-in contact with the tubular water-heater c c c, Src., and at the same time admitting a central current, asshown by arrows, io pass up with its velocity to keep up thenecessary powerful draft. This section of cones forces the current out from the center against the heating-'pipes c c c in the chimney B, increasing the heat and current in contact with tubes or pipes c c c c, making them much hot` ter and preventing the accumulation ot1 lumi nous or other prodnctsofcombustion on the heating tubes or pipes;
In the accompanying drawingsg, Fig. l is a. vertical section through the center ot' the water heater pipes cc c, Snc., sectional draftpipe f j' ff or chimney smoke-box A, and chimney witkMexhawpipe-g in place vltltileiimney B. Fig.
is aside view ofsectional draft pipes or cones jffjand sectional cones M, and braces or iastenings k k k removed from the feed-water heater. smoke-box, and sniokepipe B. Fig. 31s a side view of feed-water heating pipes' cf: c c c, &c., and top pipe-ring, l, with bottom l part removed. Fig. 4. is a top view of pipe I ring C, showing the feed-\vatcr heating pipes i c c c. Src., and the feed-pipes yi t andjj. l Like letters in the dilerent figures refer lo like parts. l A the smoke hox,exhibiti ng the front liucshcet. l B is the chimney above the smoke-box. i c c c, Src., are the vertical tubes connected l to the top and bottom tubes, d and e, in the l same manner of connecting dues to the ilue- Sheet of the boiler. Opposite each ot these vertical tubes is an opening titted with a holi lowscrew-plug to enable the tubes to be taken i out or put in when necessary. Fourof these l holes are used to attach the feed-pipes i and lj j, there being a division formed in the lower pipe-ring, e e, set-ting ot one-half of the l tubes for rising and the other tor descending tubes, or this number can be changed at pleasure. These top and bottom tulies` a'te beet constructed ot'a round form, as exhibited by drawings; but this lorm may be changed nt the option of the builder to snitthe engine.
jf, ttc., are the sections ot' the draft or cleaning chimney to cause the heat to enter hetween all parts of the tubes in the smoke-box A, and the sectional cones BI are to force the current of steam and heated gases through and against all parts of the tubes in the chimney B, thus entirely enveloping the feed-water heater in the escaping heat in its passage to the chimney and'in its passage through the same.
g is the short exhaustpi pes. i'
/t li are stays to support and steady the water-heater.
z i, Fig. 4, are the feed pipes that connect the pumps.
jj, Fig. 4, are the water-pipes .leading from the heater to the boiler. The water is contained inside of the tubes. One or more series Vor'rowsr of tubes may be used or a portion of the tubes' made short by melting' thelovor BEST AVAILABLE COPY parts when:
