UNITED STA FREDRIGK BLEIER, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
DAMPER FOR CLEANING STOVEPIPES AND REGULA'IING THE DRAFT IN THE SAME.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 7,015, dated January 15, 1850.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDRICK BLEIER, of the city of Pittsburgh, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful improvement in the means and mode of cleaning stovepipes without the inconvenience of taking them down and also avoiding the great danger from fire attendant on the old mode and that said invention will so add to the draft of a stove to the pipe of which it is applied that a fire can be instantly lighted and no dust or ashes can escape into the room while making a fire or cleaning the pipe; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings.
Figure 1, A and C. Is the upright portions of a stovepipe with the apparatus (D) for cleaning inserted therein. B. Is a crank, attached to the apparatus (D) used for the purpose of turning the same around within the pipe, for the purpose of scraping. K. Is a cap placed on the top of the pipe (A), to be taken off when the apparatus (D) is placed within.
Fig. 2, D. Is the apparatus to be inserted in the pipe (A) and is constructed of two strips of fiat or hoop iron, attached to a ring at the t0p,.1nade to fit the inside'of pipe (A) across this ring is a bar in the center of which is inserted a shaft on the top of which is the crank (B) to give the revolving motion to the apparatus (D)below the crank is the top scraper. Gr. Is an additional scraper placed above the scraper (D,) but attached thereto for the purpose of reaching the top of pipe (A) ,-and cleaning that portion obstructed by the insertion of the horizontal pipe Fig. 3, E. Is a pipe attached to pipe (A) as an elbow, with the scraper with the rods attached, and passing out through pipe (A), at (2'. d.) in such manner as to give to the scraper (F) an oblique position as will be seen, by one rod being drawn farther back than the other.
Fig. 4, F. Is the scraper as seen inserted in the pipe (E) and is constructed of a solid plate of sheet iron of a circular form, exactly to fit the inside of pipe (E), on two opposite sides of this circular plate. There is cut a small slot or nich, across the center of these slots is fastened a small iron pin to each of which is attached a small rod, in such manner as to act as a hinge and play easy on the iron pins these two rods (Z) and c) to be long enough to reach the entire length of the horizontal pipe (E) and to pass across the pipe (A) at (2', (Z). When it is desired to clean the pipe, the scraper is drawn back by the handle at (i, (L) and the soot thrown into the pipe (A), on the scraper being replaced one of the rods is held back a little and gives the scraper an oblique position as seen in Fig. 3, to let the smoke pass from the stove.
It will be seen that the scraper (F) for the horizontal pipe (E), and the scraper (D) for the perpendicular pipe (A) and (C) can be placed in their pro-per position and remain there permanently affording the facility of cleaning the pipe at any moment without any inconvenience, and also that the scraper (F) can be used as a damper at will.
WVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The scraper (F) with the rods attached in such manner that it may be used for the purpose of cleaning the stovepipe and also to act as a damper, as set forth in the above specification.
