Description
J. 0. HEBERT. TOBACCO PIPE STEM. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 20, 1909.
Patented Aug. 8; 1911.
UNITE BTATEB PATENT FFTQE;
JOSEPH ORSON I-IEBERT, OF SAVANNA, ILLINOIS.
TOBACCO-PIPE STEM.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH ORSON HE- BERT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Savanna, in the county of Carroll and State of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in Tobacco -Pipe Stems, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tobacco pipes and has particularly in view certain novel improvements in the stem thereof, which will prevent saliva from the smoker passing into the pipe bowl.
In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above, it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, certain preferred and practical embodiments of which are shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein the improved pipe is shown in cen tral longitudinal section.
Referring to said drawings, it will be seen that the improved pipe is composed of a mouth piece A having an opening B formed through it, said mouth piece being of tapering formation its inner end being thickened and provided with an annular outstanding threaded flange 1), and an inner annular abutment shoulder D which surrounds a re cess E. The opening B extends through the stem and communicates with the lower portion of said recess when the parts of the pipe are assembled, as will be more fully explained.
The pipe bowl C is provided with an upwardly curved tube extension C, having an opening F formed through it, said opening preferably extending through the upper portion of said extension. The outer end of said extension 0 is provided with a reduced threaded extension C adapted for engagement with the flange D of the mouth piece A.
lVhen the parts of the pipe are assembled, it will be seen that the opening F through the extension C will communicate with the Specification of Letters Patent.

upper portion of the recess E and the opening through the mouth piece A being in com munication with the lower portion of the recess, any saliva from the smoker will be retained in said chamber, thereby preventing the saliva entering the pipe bowl.
It will be seen that the stem may be readily separated so that the cleaning of the pipe may be facilitated, and it will also be seen that through the described arrangement of the bowl extension and the mouth piece, the oil, etc., from the bowl will be prevented from gaining access to the mouth of the user owing to the upward curve of said extension, and necessarily the saliva from the user will be prevented from passing to the bowl owing to the upward course it would be compelled to pursue when passing from the mouth piece to the bowl, thereby both preventing the objectionable oil, etc., from the tobacco reaching the mouth of the user, and also preventing the saliva from the user reaching the bowl through the described openings of the section, the saliva will be prevented, by gravity, from entering the pipe bowl.
What I claim as my invention is A pipe comprising a bowl provided with a stem extension, said extension provided with a longitudinal opening, the free end of said extension provided with threads, and a mouthpiece provided with an annular internally threaded flange end for detachable engagement with the threaded end of the stem extension, said mouth piece provided with an end recess, the upper portion of which communicates with the opening of Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
