Attention is directed to the fact that the lock operating mechanism is positioned beneath the running boord 23 which is also provided with a hinged closure 24. This closure 24 serves ns a signal or indicating device by 'which the position of the looking; devices nmy be determined, that is to soy by :i ,glance along the top of the our anyone muy determine whether or not any of the closures on the several cnrs :1re open.

In Fig. 5 another embodiment is shown wherein links 32 form a direct connection between the bolts 7 and an arm 33 which latter corresponds to the arm 14 heretofore described. A spring 34- encircles a potton of this arm 33 and bears at one end against the bracket 9, while its opposite end presses directly against the links 32 and-causes the 4releasing of the bolts 7 as soon as the seal 26 In unlocked position the arts assume the osition shown in Fig. 1 t e arm 14 being hield up by the spring 12 and retainin the closures 21 and 24 open.A The latter 24 eing located in the runnin board forms a signal which may be rea ily seen by a glance along the top of the car. This is an irnportant feature since the Caboose windows are alined with the top of the cars so that the top of the entire train is in view.
The locking of the doors is effected by ressing the arm -14 downwardly to drive liome the bolts 7 after which the closure 21 is dro )pcd and sealed and the closure 24 lowere as shown in Fi 2. The parts are thus firml and securel dockedl together and can only lie released y breaking the seal 2G. Should anyone tamper with the device and break' the seal the sprin release immediately-opens the closures an gives a visible signal which can be seen from the caboose.
It will now be apparent that I have devised a complete unitary structure, simple in construction, effective in operation and :by
4#which the doors of a oar may be securely ifastened and further any tampering with or unlocking of the 4same will cause an indicae tor to be displayed warning the trainmen.
It will now be 'apparent that I have devised a novel and). useful construction of e lookin device for cars and the like which embodies' 'the features of advantage enumerzited as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and while I have in the 'present instance, shown and described a preferred embodiment theref which has -been found in practice to give combination with a cur top, a closure there actuated. by said oliwraliin;l mechanism und means to release said boltffwhen said signal moans .is free to operaie.
