Description

L. H. BODIMER. CAR DOOR LOCK.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 1. I917.
1 ,2'81,279. Patented Oct; 15, 1918.
LEROY H. BODIMER, OF'CHICAGO HEIGHTS, ILLINOIS.
GAR-DOOR LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. '15, 1918.
Application filed-March 1, 1-917. Serial No. 151,782.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEROY H. BODIMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago Heights, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Door Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to latches and has particular reference to new and useful improvements in car door locks, the device having for its primary object the provision of a lock for retaining closed the standard type of freight car doors, means being provided whereby any standard type of seal may be applied to the latch to prevent unauthorized opening of the door.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which is simple in construction, stron and durable and cheap to manufacture, it eing possible to apply the device to any of the existing types of railway car doors without material alteration of the structure of the same.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which is semi-automatic in operation, only two movements being required to lock the door effectively in closed position.
Other objects and advantages to be derived from the use of my improved door latch will appear from the following detailed description and the claim, taken with an inspection of the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure'l is a fragmental perspective view of a portion of a door showing my improved latch applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmental elevational view of a portion of the lock; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmental perspective of the hasp head.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, wherein similar characters of reference designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, 10 designates the door frame and 11 a portion ofa door. The latch of my invention includes two constituent parts, one each of which is to be applied to the door and frame. A latch bracket 12 is provided, mounted on the door frame, said bracket 12 being provided with a main base portion 13 and a supplemental base portion 14, said portions 13 and 14 being connected to the door frame 10 by means of bolts 15 or the like. The bracket 12 is provided with a latch opening 16 arranged in alinement with the hasp member 17 said hasp member having an aperture 18 adjacent one end thereof, a strap 19 bcing provided, said strap having a loop portion 20 engaging through the aperture 18. The free ends of the strap 19 are fastened to the door by means of bolts 21 or the like. The hasp member 17 is provided at opposite points adjacent its free end with recesses 22 forming a head 23 for engagement through the opening 16.
A latch plate 24 is pivotally mounted on the bracket 12 as at 25, said latch plate having a portion thereof cut away as at 26 to engage the reduced portion of the hasp when the latter is inserted through the opening 16. The distance between the upper end of the opening 16 and the upper edge of the recess 26 is approximately equal to the width of the hasp member 17 adjacent the recesses. so that when the latch plate 24 is swung into the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the heads 23 cooperating with said latch plate will prevent removal of the hasp-member. A pair of alining openings 28 are provided in the plate 24 and bracket 12 to receive a strip seal member 29 of any standard make.
To look the door 11 the same is slid into the usual closed position, the heads 23 of the hasp member 17 being engaged in the opening 16. The latch plate 24 is now turned into engagement with the head 23 and the seal inserted. It is now practically impossible to open the door without either removing the strap 19 or breaking the seal. By the provision of the latch plate 24 as shown rattling or endwise movement of the door is prevented, owing to the fact that the edge of the door abuts the frame 10 or the bracket 12 and the head 23 engages said plate 24 preventing any lost motion. The device may be applied to any freight car door by modifying the bracket 12 to fit the door frame.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing. it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of my invention may be had, and while I have shown and described the device as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a device of the class described, the combination with a door frame and sliding door, of a bracket member carried by the door frame and extending outwardly therefrom, a hasp member pivoted on the door and being'provided with a head, said bracket being provided with an aperture to receive the head, a latch plate pivoted on said bracket provided with a recess to cooperate With said opening to engage the head on said hasp when the same is inserted through said opening, and a sealing member for engagement with said bracket and said latch plate.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature hereto.
LEROY H. BODIMER.
