WILBERT R. MCGEE, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
IRONING-BOARD.
Application filed June 11, 1909, Serial No. 501,477.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVILBER'r R. MOGEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of Kingand State of Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Boards, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my improvements is the production of an ironing-board which will be of simple and inexpensive construction; which is adapted to be readily secured to or disengaged from the end of a kitchen table and that, too, without the manipulation of any clamping screws, or the like; which is supported and braced so as to furnish a rigid structure; and which may be folded into a small compass when unemployed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of an ironing-board embodying my invention and shown in operative position; and Fig. 2 is an underside plan view of the same, when collapsed. Fig. 3 is a detail cross sectional view.
The board proper is formed of a wooden board 5 of any appropriate shape and is desirably provided with a reinforcing cleat 6 at the extremity of the head end and upon the top side. Upon the underside of the board and at a short distance from said end is a transversely arranged bar 7 which is secured at its midlength, as by a screwbolt 8 and a butter-fly nut 9, to the board. The ends of this bar afford suflicient resilience to yieldingly hold the gripping member in position. Said gripping member is formed of stiff wire and is comprised of a looped end 10 which protrudes beyond the head end of the board and is directed upwardly, as shown in Fig. 1. The branches of this loop extend downwardly, as at 11, thence longitudinally beneath the board, as at 12, thence upwardly to meet the board whence the branches are further prolonged, as at 13, to extend beneath said bar and ter minate therebeyond in upwardly directed toes 14 which are socket-ed in recesses provided in the board.
To engage the board with a table the tail end of the board is tilted upwardly to allow the edge of the table top 15 being inserted between the loop part 10 ofi the gripping member and the lower edge of the board. By lowering the tail end so that the board will assume a horizontal position the gripping member is sprung downwardly and the Specification of Letters Patent.

tension upon said member causes it to grasp the table edge with force sufficient to prevent its easy displacement. The bar 7 reinforces and supports the gripping member in its grasp of the table and allows of adjustment of the opening between said member and the board edge to provide for varying thicknesses of tables.
Cushion pieces 16 of rubber, or an equivalent, are secured to the underside of the board to furnish a better clamping face and also to prevent the marring of the table with which the board is to be clamped.
Hinged to the underside of the board is a leg 17 having a recess 18 along the top edge which is notched, as at 19, to afi'ord a lodgment for the looped portion 20 of a brace 21. The latter is maintained within the recess by a guard strap 22 which spans the recess and is rigidly secured to the leg. Said guard strap is doubled to provide a loop 23 which protrudes beyond the end of said leg to inclose a hinge pintle 24 of an attachment 25 secured to the underside of the board. The brace 21, see Fig. 2, is made of a stiff wire or a rod and is formed with legs 26 which diverge from the intermediate loop 20 to the extremities 27 which are directed out wardly. Angular shaped members 28 are firmly secured to the underside of the board at about the mid-length of the latter and in proximity to the lateral edges thereof. The members 28 are each formed with a longitudinally arranged depending flange 29 severally provided with a series of spaced holes 30 and which may be selectively used for socketing the respective extremities 27 of said brace and whereby the inclination of the leg 17 may be regulated to support the board in horizontal position for various heights of tables.
The operation of the invention will, it is thought, be understood from the foregoing.
What I claim, is
1. The combination of a board, a gripping member comprising a looped central portion which protrudes beyond the head end of the board and terminating at the rear in upwardly directed extremities which are socketed in recesses provided in the board, a transversely arranged bar for securing said member to the board, adjustable means for securing said bar to the board, a leg hingedly connected to one end of the board, a bifurcated brace connected intermediate its extremities to the leg, and means for secur ing the extremities of said brace in various adjusted positions to the board.
2. The combination of a board, agripping member comprising a looped central portion which protrudes beyond the head end of the board and terminating at the rear in upwardly extending extremities which are socketed in recesses provided in the board, a transversely arranged bar for securing said member to the board, adjustable means for securing said bar to the board, a leg hingedly connected to one end of the board, and provided with a recess in one edge, a strap extending lengthwise o 'er said recess, a bifurcated brace slidably connected intermediate its extremities within said recess to the leg, and means for securing the extremities of said brace in various adjusted positions to the board.
3. The combination of a board, cushion pieces secured to the head end of said board, a gripping member comprising a looped central portion which protrudes beyond the head end of the board and terminating at the rear in upwardly directed extremities which are socketed in recesses provided in the board, a transversely arranged bar for securing said member to the board, adjustable means for securing said bar to the board, a leg hingedly connected at one end to the board and provided with a recess at one edge, a strap extending lengthwise over said recess, a bifurcated brace slid-ably connected intermediate its extremities within said recess to the leg, and means for seem ing the extremities of said brace in various adjusted positions to the board.
