Be it known that I, HENRY W. KNAUTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Devices, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to display devices and more specifically to that class thereof designed for use especially in the displaying of cloth samples or such other samples or articles as can be conveniently mounted upon cards for that purpose.

The object of my invention is the provision of a display device of the character mentioned, which will be of durable and economical construction and efficient in operation.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

Vith these objects in view, my invention consists in a displaying device characterized as above mentioned, and in certain details of construction and arrangement of parts, all as will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the append- My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which,

Referring now to the drawings particularly to figures from 1 to 3 inclusive, 1 indicates the cards upon which are secured the samples to be displayed. Said cards are of rectangular form and the same are all of substantially the same dimensions, the lateral edges of each adjacent the end 2 thereto being provided with transversely alining notches 3.

To the end 2 of each of the cards 1 at the underside thereof is secured one end of a flexible strip 4 of suitable fabric. To the opposite end of each of the strips 4 is secured a narrow rigid paste-board strip 5. At the extremities of each of the strips 5 are provided inwardly opening pockets (3 formed preferably of fabric, said pockets being adapted to receive the extremities of the end portions 2 of the cards 1, it being, as is understood, necessary to buckle the latter in order to reduce the width thereof so as to permit of the insertion of the ends thereof into said pockets. The notches 3, as will be observed, afford clearance for the inner end walls of the pockets in this insertion of the card edges into the latter. With this arrangement it will be seen that any number of the cards 1 bearing the samples or the articles for display may be connected together for extension to displaying condition as shown in the right hand end portions of Figs. 1 and 2, or be folded into compact contracted condition as shown at the left hand end portions of said figures and in Fig. 3; the extent of contracting and extending movement being limited by the width of the intermediate unattached or free portions of the strips 4.

In Figs. 4, 5 and 6 is shown an almost identical construction to that just described, the arrangement being, however, slightly different. The difference in construct-ion resides simply in the provision of notches 7 in the ends 8 of the cards 1, said notches being similar to the notches 3 provided in the opposite end thereof and similarly positioned relative to the adjacent edge. With this provision it will be seen that by wrapping the flexible strips 1 over the upper sides of strips 5 and by connecting the ends 8 of said cards to the latter so that the intermediate portions of said strips 4: are held between said strips 5 and said ends 8, the display cards may be attached end to end forming one continuous band, the entire displaying surface of each card being in thls arrangement exposed.

In figures from 7 to 11 inclusive, wherein is shown another modified form, the display cards 1 are formed entirely detachable from the remainder of the construction, the ends of the flexible strips 4 to which the cards 1, in the above construction, are attached, being in this form secured to narrow paste-board strips 9, the latter being of dimensions substantially the same as those of the strips 5. lVit-h this arrangement a band is first formed by connecting together sections each of which comprises a strip 5, a strip 9, and the intermediate connecting flexible port-ion 1, as shown in Figs. 10 and 11, the strip 9 of each being connected to the strip 5 of the succeeding or adjacent section by engagement of the pockets 6 thereof, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8. The end portions 2 of the cards 1 in attaching the same in this form rest upon the strips 9, the extremities of the former as in the before described forms engaging the pockets 6 of the strips 5. The folding and extending operation of the first described and this form are, as will be observed, identical.

In figures from 12 to 15 inclusive, is illus trated a form wherein the strips 9 are dispensed with, the flexible strips 1 carrying the strips 5 being secured directly to the cards 1. In this, form, however, it will be noted that the strips 4 are of comparatively narrow width, no intermediate portions to permit of extension as above described, being left between the strips 5 and the cards 1. In this form the strips 5 may be folded back upon the cards 1 and thus connected in book form, as shown in Fig. 13, or said strips may be extended, as shown in Figs. 14 and 15, and the cards 1 connected end to end to form one continuous strip as before described, and as shown in Fig. 4.

In figures from 16 to 19 inclusive, is illustrated a form which is identical in construction with that shown in Figs. 1 and 2 except that in this form the ends of the flexible strip port-ions 1 secured to the cards 1 are extended and the latter, excepting the uppermost one 10 thereof, which serves as a cover card, being slit as at 11 coplanar with the notches 3 therein, the extended portions of strips 4: serving as a hinge to swingingly connect the card parts. With this provision it will be seen that either side of the sample bearing portions of the cards may be displayed and hence both sides may be utilized for carrying samples or articles for display.

In Figs. 20, 21, 22 and 23 is shown a form wherein the display cards are detachable as in the form shown in figures from 7 to 11 inclusive, the strips 9 included in that form being, however, in this form dispensed with. In the latter form a single elongated flexible band 12 is employed upon which are equally spaced and rigidly secured strips 5. When assembled this form it will be seen presents the same appearance as the forms shown in Figs. 1 to 7.

In any of the forms it will be noted that the display cards either entirely separate or provided with appendages may be readily and quickly attached or detached, so that, the insertion of new samples into a display device or the removal or withdrawal if desired of others therefrom may be readily effected. Further, cords, tacks, metal fasteners, or like securing devices which are in common use at the present time, and which are more or less difficult, and tedious to manipulate and which might also be easily lost, are not employed in this device.

The device is strong and durable, it may be manufactured at a low cost, and is of highest efliciency especially for sample-fabric displaying.

While I have shown what I deem to be the preferable forms of my invention, I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be various changes made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts described without departing from the spirit of the invention comprehended within the scope of the appended claims.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A display device comprising a series of display cards; a strip flexibly secured to each of said cards; and means at the opposite ends of each of said strips for detachably engaging said cards, substantially as described.

2. A display device comprising a series of display cards; a strip flexibly secured to each of said cards; and pockets at the opposite ends of each of said strips, there being notches in the sides of said cards arranged to permit detachable engagement with said pockets, substantially as described.

3. In a display device, the combination of a plurality of cards adapted to carry the articles for display, and means for detacha-bly securing said cards together, said means comprising rigid strips having pockets in their extremities adapted to engage the lateral edges of said cards, and flexible cards, and flexible connections between adjacent of said strips and cards, substantially as described.
