Be it known that I, JOHN LEU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montreal, in the Province of Quebec and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in HatPin Shields, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to guards or protectors for womens hat pins, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is extremely simple in construction, which can be manufactured at a low cost, which cannot he accidentally removed from the pin and Which is ornamental in appearance.

\Vith the above, and other objects in view, which will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a guard constructed in accordance with the present invention, and slmwing the same in applied position. Fig. 2 is an enlarged central lon gitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken upon the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. d is a view of the blank from which the device is constructed.

As is well known, pins for women s hats, as now constructed, frequently project a dis tance beyond the hat, and thus become a menace when the hat is worn upon a crowded thoroughfare. The pin is also dangerous when the hat is not on the head of the wearer, as for instance, in theaters, dressing rooms, etc.

In order to overcome the above objections I have constructed a hat pin guard or protector designated by the numeral 1. This protector 1 may be constructed of a single piece of resilient metal and comprises a substantially bell-shaped mouth portion 2 from which project in opposite directions the arms 3 and 4. The portions of the arms directly connected with the bellshaped mouth 2 diverge toward each other and are con tinued in a parallel line with each other a distance and from thence bent upwardly and outwardly in opposite directions. One of the upwardly projecting portions of the arm 3 may be bent upon itself to form the rear wall 5. The extension of the rear 5 may be connected with the extension of the arm 3 through the medium of a rivet 6 or other analogous device. The end portion 5 of the device is preferably centrally provided with a soft yieldable stop member 7, the same being constructed preferably of rubber.

By reference to the several figures of the drawings it will be noted that the bell shaped mouth 2 of the member is provided with a reduced entrance opening 8, the same being positioned directly between the arms 3 and 4E, and it will be noted that when a pin is inserted through the said opening the same will be tightly grasped by the resilient arms and that injury to the point of the pin will be effectively prevented by the rub ber member 8.

Each of the arms 3 and 4 have one of their edges cut away longitudinally as at 9 and their opposite edges provided with lon gitudinally extending lips or offsets 10 which are adapted to engage within the cut away portions 9 of the arms. By this arrangement it will be understood that the re silient arms 3 and 4 are at all times retained in proper alinement with each other, and both of the arms 3 and I are centrally provided with a longitudinally extending depression 11 positioned upon their inner faces and arranged in alinement with the central opening of the bell-shaped front or mouth 2. The walls provided by these depressions may, if desired, be serrated so that the pin will be more securely retained between the compressible arms. The said depressions, it will be apparent, also serve as guideways whereby the pin may be readily inserted so as to contact with the yieldable stop member 7.

From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be noted that I have provided an extremely simple and thoroughly effective device for the purpose intended, and while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of the improvement, as it now appears to me, changes in the minor details of construction, within the scope of the following claims may be resorted to if desired.

Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new is The herein described construction of protectors for hat pins, comprising a member formed from a single piece of resilient material, said member comprising a back which is bent at an angle to provide a centrally arranged forwardly cxtending arm, the said arm having one of its longitudinal edges cut away, the opposite edge of the arm being bent to provide a lip, the said arm forward of the lip and cut away portion being bent downwardly and inwardly to provide a bell shaped mouth, the said mouth being provided with an opening registering with the top wall of the arm the end of the metal forming the mouth being bent downwardly and continued in a plane parallel with and resiliently engaging the arm to provide a second arm, the meeting faces of both of the arms being formed with longitudinal depressions, the second arm having one of its edges bent to provide a lip adapted to engage within the cut away portion of the first arm, the opposite edge of the second arm being cut away to receive the lip of the first arm, and the extremity of the second arm being bent and connected to the back member diametrically opposite the junction of the said back member and the first mentioned arm.
