Be it known that I, CHARLES R. KEATIN G, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fond du Lac, in the county of Fond du Lac and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Box-Cover Clamps, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to improvements in clamps especially adapted for use for securing glazed covers on the upper sides of cracker boxes and the like for displaying purposes for the contents of such boxes and to enable access to be readily had to the contents of such boxes so that such contents may be readily dispensed and the said invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings z-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cracker box having a glazed top or sash secured in place by clamps constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the clamps,
It is usual in retail stores to remove the top of a cracker or the like, box from which the contents are to be dispensed and to place thereon a glazed cover having a hinged section at one end to display the contents of the box attractively and also to enable access to be readily obtained thereto so that the goods may be conveniently dispensed. Such a box is indicated at 1 in Fig. 1 of the drawing. the glazed cover at 2 and the hinge section of the glazed cover at 3 and disposed over one end of the box. Cracker boxes of standard size vary somewhat in width and hence a glazed cover such as will exactly iit on one box may be slightly too wide or too narrow to exactly tit on another.
In accordance with my invention, I provide a pair of clamps l each of which is an angle piece having a vert-ical arm 5 to bear on one side of the box and a horizontal arm 6 at the upper end of said vertical arm to bear on one side bar of the glazed cover 2. The said horizontal arm is provided with a slot 7 or adjusting opening longitudinally thereof and said arm of the clamp is secured on the side bar of the glazed cover by Specification of Letters Patent.

means of a bolt S which extends through said bar and through the slot 7 and a winged nut 9 on said bolt so that each clamp is adjustably secured on the glazed cover for lateral movement according to the width of the box and to compensate for variations in the width of boxes on which the glazed cover may be used. The vertical arm 5 of each clamp has an opening 10 near its lower end for the reception of a wood screw 11, or other attaching device, said screw having a broadened head 12 whereby it may be readily turned by hand to secure the clamp to or detach the same from one side of the box.
It will be understood from the foregoing and by an inspection of Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing that my improved clamps serve to securely fasten 'glazed covers on the boxes and enable such glazed covers to be readily fastened or removed from the boxes in a very short space of time and entirely without the use of tools so that when the box on which the glazed cover has been used becomes emptied, the said glazed cover' may by means of my improved clamp be very expeditiously removed from the emptied box and installed on a full one.
That is claimed is The combination of a box and a cover therefor resting on the upper edges of the walls of the box, with an L-shaped clamp having one member extending over the cover and the other member extending down one side of the box, a fastening passing through the last-mentioned member and inserted in the box, the upper member being longitudinally slotted inwardly from its outer end, a headed fastening passing upwardly through the cover and having its headed lower end countersunk in the cover and disposed in line with the adjacent side wall of the box, the threaded end of the headed fastening passing through the slot of the clamp, and a nut on the threaded end of the fastening tightened against the clamp to hold the parts together.
