Be it known that I, ANDREW J. KETELsEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment Hangers and Stretchers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to suit hangers for preserving the shape of coats, vests and trousers, and the principal object of the same is to provide the hanger with means whereby it may be expanded to stretch trousers, or adjusted to the length of the trousers to be placed therein, means being provided for locking the same in an adjusted position, and means also being provided to lock the hanger in a contracted position so that when the trousers stretching portion is not in use or the hanger not in use, but a small amount of storage space will be required.

In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are necessarily susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying draw ings, wherein z- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved hanger as it appears in use. Fig. 5 is a central vertical sectional view taken on the line 55, Fig. 2. 6 is a detail perspective view of the locking arm carried by the upper portion of the hanger.

Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 designates the head of the improved hanger the upper edge of which is curved and provided with a flat strip 2 that overhangs the front and rear of said head. A suspending hook 3 is pivotally connected to the central portion of the front of said head and said strip 2 is provided with a central slot 1 through which said hook projects when rocked in position ,to engage a support 5. A clamping lever 6 has one end pivotally connected to one end of head 1, the other end of said lever being adapted to be engaged by a catch 7 pivotally mounted at the opposite end of said head. A locking arm 8 has one end pivotally connected to the Specification of Letters Patent.

Head 1 and base bar 10 are connected by a system of toggle levers 14 which obviously permits relative adjustments of said bar and head. The upper members of said toggle levers are each provided with an opening 15 and when said openings are in alinement, the lug 9 of arm 8 may be engaged therewith to lock the hanger in an expanded position. The base members of the toggles are provided with similar openings 16 which aline when the hanger is contracted so that they may be engaged by lug 9 to lock the hanger in a contracted position as shown in Fig. 2. The said base members of the toggle levers 14: at their point of pivotal connection with the toggle, each carry a locking arm. Said arms are designated by the numerals 17 and 18. Arm 17 is provided with a laterally projecting lug 19, and arm 18 is provided with a longitudinal row of transverse openings 21 adapted to be selectively engaged by lug 19 to prevent the toggle being collapsed.

From the foregoing description, it will be seen that when the toggle is fully expanded, openings 15 are in alinement so that the end lug 9 of arm 8 can be engaged with said openings to lock the toggle in such position. "When contracted, openings 16 are in alinement so that the said lug 9 can be engaged therewith to lock the toggle in its contracted position. It will also be seen that the arms 17 and 18, through the lug 19 and openings 21, permit the toggle to be locked in adjusted positions.

hat I claim as my invention is 1- 1. A garment hanger and stretcher comprising a head provided with suspending means, trousers clamping means carried by said head, a base, trousers clamping means carried thereby, a toggle connection between said head and base, the upper and lower members of said toggle provided with openings, and a locking arm pivoted to said head and provided with a lug adapted to engage the opening of the upper members to retain the toggle expanded and the openings of the lower members to retain the toggle eontracted.

2. A garment hanger comprising a head, a base, a toggle connection therebetween, said toggle provided with sets of openings, the openings of one set being in alinement when the toggle is contracted and the openings of the other set being in alinement when the toggle is expanded, means for selectively engaging said alined openings to lock the toggle in extreme expanded and contracted position, and a pair of oppositely-disposed arms In testimony whereof I hereunto allix my 20 signature in presence of two witnesses.
