To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL D. LANGLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Madisonville, in the county of Hopkins and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Desk- Racks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to desk appliances, and more particularly to a rack adapted to support ink and mucilage wells, envelops, stamps, pen points, penholders, bills, and the like, and has for its object to provide a device meeting these many uses which will occupy a minimum amount of space, which will be easily constructed from a minimum.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawings, there is shown a base 10 having a suitable swivel socket 11 centrally thereof, the base being formed. of wood or other suitable material having a plate 12 in its lower surface covering the lower end of the socket 11 and having the annular collar 13 circumscribing the socket on its upper surface. A suitable tubular support post 14 is carried revolubly in the socket 11, having a washer or bearing collar 15 therearound adjacent the base 10. Carried snugly upon the post 1 1, there is the revoluble platform 16 formed preferably of sheet metal, with its lateral edge portion curved inwardly as shown at 17 Carried centrally of the platform, there is a partition 16, secured to the post 14.- and to the platform. The post 14 projects some distance above the'partition 16, and carries immediately above the partition a suitable series of boxes 18 adapted for the reception of pins, pen points and the like. Secured at opposite sides of the post lt, there are bracing yokes 19, formed of wire each bent intermediate of its ends to provide two convergent diagonal members 20, having a plurality of serrations 21 thereon adapted to support one end of a pen, pencil or the like in cooperation with a like serration on the yoke at the opposite side of the device. The arms 20 are gradually curved outwardly at their lower ends to a point over the end edge of the platform 16, adjacent one corner when thev are extended vertically downward, and turned outwardly and laterally beneath the inwardly turned portion 17 of the platform, to the adjacent front and rear edge, when they are extended outwardly as shown at 18, thence upwardly as at 19 and inwardly as shown at 20 where they are secured to the vertical portions of the arms 20, forming end frames 22 for basket receptacles A at opposite sides of the device. A suitable connecting bar 23 is engaged between the upper outer portions of the frames, and a suitable wire netting of rectangular shape is woven over the parts 18 to 20 inclusive and the bar 23, as shown. In this manner a suitable basket A is formed at each side of the device for holding letters or other articles. The converging portions of the arms 20 are secured against the post 14, and serve to support revolubly the file member 32, which comprises the annular collar 33 revoluble upon the post and resting upon the upper end of the yoke 19, which collar has suitably secured thereto the oppositely extending arms of the file member 32, the extremities of which'are turned upwardly as at 34 and pointed to allow piercing engagement thereof with bills or other papers. Engaged over the collar 33, there is a suitable retaining nut 35 held securely upon the post 14 against casual detachment.

Slidable in the post 14, there is a file staff 36 adapted to be secured adjustably at various heights on the post by means of a set screw 37 projecting through the side of the post as shown. Thus this file may be adjusted to the proper height to accommodate any quantity of papers, and may be ar ranged to always project only a short distance above the papers contained thereon, whereby its use as a file is largely facilitated.

The revoluble file 32 is adapted to use as a handle for lifting of the device at times, as will be readily appreciated, the fingers of the operator being disposed beneath the opposite portion of the file and the device raised as will be readily understood.

The platform 16 is provided with a series of recesses 40, adapted to receive ink wells, and carried centrally thereof between certain of the recesses, there is a drawer casing 38, in which there is slidable a suitable drawer 39 adapted to contain stamps and other accessories, the drawer being provided with the small knob 39 on its front face. Inwardly of the drawer, there is located a suitable recess or containing space adapted to hold a small jar or well of mucilage etl.

It will be seen from the foregoing that an extremely simply constructed desk appliance has been provided well adapted for the use for which it is designed, the manufacturing cost of which is reduced to a minimum for the provision of the elements shown.

In use, the platform 16 resting upon the bearing collar 15, there is offered a considerable frictional surfacewhich slightly retards rotation of the device, so that it will not be liable to be rotated by the striking of papers thereagainst in such a manner as to interfere with the convenience of the user. Under normal use the letter receptacles A at each side of the device are disposed at a convenient distance out of the way, but when it is desired to remove an article therefrom the device may be rotated to present these receptacles immediately before the user and the desired matter extracted with ease. The same is true of the file 32, provided with the oppositely disposed upwardly extending piercing port-ions 34. Under normal use, these extend transversely of the users desk, and bills or other papers may be readily filed thereon, one class of papers being put upon one and another class upon the other, and besides a third character of paper may be filed upon the central adjustable file 36. These file portions of the member 32 are normally extended transversely, holding their contents to one side of the complete device, but when it is desired to inspect articles thereon may be rotated to present either one or the other of the arms toward the user, whereby the papers are located in the most convenient position for inspection and may be readily moved out of the way after use. Suitable ink wells or other receptacles 42 are disposed in the recesses 40, for the reception of inks of various kinds.

What is claimed is:

1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a stationary base member and a revoluble standard carried thereby, of a platform surrounding the standard, diagonal members extending from the platform to the standard member, said diagonal members having portions extending outwardly to form end frames for basket receptacles, finer material carried upon said frames, said diagonal members having penholder supporting portions and supporting at their upper ends a collar engaged revolubly around the standard. said collar having oppositely extending piercing arms adapted for engagement through papers, and means for retaining said collar upon the standard, said laterally extending portions being adapted to be grasped for lifting of the device.

2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a platform adapted for the support of ink wells and the like, of a plurality of brace members, said. brace 1nemers being disposed in pairs at opposite sides of the platform and extending vertically a spaced distance thereabove and being connected adj acent the center of the device, said brace members having portions extended outwardly, upwardly and inwardly to form end frames for receptacles.

3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a platform having inwardly turned end portions, of oppositely disposed yoke members formed of wire and bent oppositely from their middles to form divergent inclined portions from which are projected downwardly a vertical. portion adjacent the corners of the platform, the wire being turned laterally from the vertical portions beneath the inwardly turned edges of the platform, thence extended out-wardly, upwardly and inwardly, and being then connected to the vertical portions for forming end frames for receptacles.

4.
