Description

J. G. HODGSON. PROCESS OF MANUFACTURING LACQUBRED OR PROTECTIVE COATED CANS. APPLICATION FILED APRS, 1907.
Patented July 18, 1911.
I d f 7726468556 Irw'Mr JZ/m GfladaJ Wamqg UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN G. HODG SON, F MAYWOOD,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. HoocsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Maywoo d. in'the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful improvement in Processes of Manufactun" ing Lacquered or Protective-Coated Cans,
of which the following 18 a specification.
' soldered end seams My invention relates to improvements in the alter process of manufacturing sheet metalv preserving cans of tin plate, having uniting the top and bottom heads to the body of the can, and which are provided with lacquer-or other protective coating onv the the food or other products t'roin direct contact with the tin plate and with the solder upon tl e inside of the can at the soldered end scams or joints thereof.
Heretot'ore sheet metal preserving cans having lacquer or protective coatings on the inside and made with soldered end seams have been made by spraying the lacquer or protective coating over the insidesurt'ace of the can after the can is made'up, and then subsequently baking or drying the lacquer or protective coating upon the inside of the cans by placing t-he'cans in an oven or heated retort, and subjecting them to a baking and drying'heat, usually about 300 degrees Fahrenheit for a period of eight or ten hours or such matter. This old method is slowjandexpensive in operation, and results in the production'of and unsatisfactory lacquered or protective coated cans, it is very ditlicult by a sprayin operation to coat the inside surface of t e can evenly and perfectly throughout, and with a coatin within the can to flow or collect at certain portions of the can, and also because it is very diiiicult to perfectly dry and'harden the coating upon the inside of a can where the coating happens to be a little toothick.
The object of my invention is .to provide a simple and etiicient method or process of rapidly and cheaply manufacturing sheet metal preserving cans having soldered end seams and inside protective coatings by means of which the objections heretofore experienced may be entirely obviated or overcome and the cans be uniformly pro-,

complete interior pro tective coatings, and by means of which also the tendency of the solder in soldering the end seams of the cans may be prevented from flowing or extending into the can and coating or smearing any portion of the interior surface of the can.
duced with perfect or process I have devised, for practically accomplishing this object or result as herein described. That is to say, it consists in first coating. in circular spots or areas, the sheets of tin plate from whichfthe can heads are to be cut and formed, with lacquer coating, the coated spots or areas corresponding in size and-shape to the Hat or disk portion ,of t l1e; 3:jili;heaClS to be cut and formed from thIe- :.Sheet,- leaving the portion thereof which for-instheflange of the can head drying the sheets, then cutting ;orlforming the can heads from the tin plat'epsheets-having such protective coating in can: head spots or areas thereon, then applying the can- 'hea'ds so formed to the can body and then" soldering the end seams in the usual manner. By thls method or process, the rotective coating upon the inside surface ot the can head, exceptthe flange thereof which has to be soldered to the can also to prevent the solder operation fr 7 body, serves in the soldering om flowing into the can and the can adjacent to the sol The can bodies or the blanks from which they are formed, whether the can bodies are seamless or made with a side seam, are also provided with an inside coating of lacquer .r other suitable material. The can caps for closing the stud holes or filling openings in the tops or upper heads of the cans are also provided with a protective coating excepting at the annular seaming flange thereof, in the same manner and in the same method employed for making the protectivecoated can head itself, v
In the accompanying drawing forming a part'of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan View showinga sheet of tin plate having can head spots or areas thereon provided with COMPANY,
iu jisaon.
. I; My nvention consists in the method or uncoated ;;,1@hen baking or g a sectional view showing a can after the can heads have been applied to the body thereof, but before the soldering operation. Fig. 5 is a similar view after the soldering operation or step. Fig. 6 is a sectional view showing the completed can after the cap has been applied and soldered thereto, this view indicating a filled can. Fig. 7 shows a can body blank from which the can body may be formed, if the can body employed is of the kind having a soldered side seam.
In the drawing, A represents a sheet of tin plate from which the can heads are to be out.
A represents a series of can head spots or areas and A can cap spots or areas of the sheet having applied thereto a rotective coating of lacquer or other suita 1e material a, the lacquer or protective coating a covering the disk portion of'the can head, but notextending over the annular portion a thereof which forms the can head flange that encircles the can body and is to be soldered' thereto, or over the can cap flange portion a thereof.
B represents the can head, C the can body, the same being either of the seamless kind or of the kind having a lap or lock side seam, as rna be preferred. The protective coating a o the can head does not extend over or cover the flange b of the can head so that the tinned inner surface of the can head which is to be soldered to the end of the can body maycome in direct contact with the tinned exterior surface of the can bodyat the end thereof to facilitate the soldering operation. a A The can body C is provided with a protective coating 0. of lacquer or other suitable material.
The can cap D has a-flaring flange or rim d and the protective coating a of the can cap extends only to the inner portion of the flange (5, thus leaving the annular surface of the flange (1 uncovered by the coating so that the cap may be readily soldered to the top head of the can by solder 6 If the can body 0 is not made seamless, but made with a soldered side scam, the can body blank from ,which it is formed is prefeea ve erably left with a narrow seaming strip f which has no lacquer or protective coating a.
I claim v n 1. The process of manufacturing sheet metal preserving cans having lacquered or protective coatings on the inside thereof, and soldered side, end and cap seams consisting in first coating the sheets of tin plate in, the flat in can-body, can head and can cap areas or spots (excepting the portions thereof from which the head andcap flanges and body seam are formed) with a protective coating, then drying and baking the sheets, then cutting and forming the can bodies, can heads and can heads having cap openings therein and can caps therefrom,
then forming the body blanks into can bodies and soldering the side seams thereof, then applyin the can heads to the can bodies and so dering the end seams thereof and finally applying the caps to the can heads and soldering the cap seams thereof, said protective coating extending to the inner edge of said seams and preventing the solder from extending to the interior 'sur face of the can, substantially as specified.
2. The process .of making protective coated can heads with cap openings therein, and with uncoated soldering flanges consisting in applying to a sheet of tin plate in the hat, aprotective coating at annular areas thereof from which the can heads are to be cut, and leaving inner and outer flange portio'n areas uncoate'd adjacent to each annular coated portion, then drying the coating,
then cutting the can heads om' the sheet and forming the can'heads' with "cap openings therein and with inner and outer annular flanges, said inner and outerannular flanges being formed from the "uncoated annular portions adjacent to each annular coated portion of the sheet, said rotective coating extending to the inner e ge of the lapping portions of said inner and outer annular flanges and serving to prevent the solder from extending to the interior'surface of the can when the cap is soldered to the -can head, substantially as specified.
