Description

'J. G. HODGSON.
CONTAINER.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. I4. 1914- RENEWED JAN. 24. I920.
Patented Mar-.12, 1920.
UNITED sT 'rEs PngENT OFFICE.
JOHN G. HODGSON, OF MAYWOOD, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN CAN COMPANY,
. OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
CONTAINER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed Septemberf14, 1914, SeriaiNu. 861,534. Renewed January 24, 1929. Serial No. 353,812.
\ To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,JoHN G. Honesou, a citizen of the United States, residin in Maywood, in the county of Cook and tate' of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Containers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the manufacture and use of containers and-the like and more particularly to the manufacture and use of sheet metal containers in the canning in-' germs and ferments.
It has frequently been the custom prior to my invention to permanently close the cans either by seaming or by plugging vents immediately upon the termination of the cooking step and to then lacquer the seamof closed vents while the can is still extremely hot and before any contraction of the material takes place. This process has been found efficient when used in canning foodstuffs wherein the period of heatingor cooking need not be accuratelydetermined and observed. In the canning of-peas and other vegetables, however, where the quality of the cooked product depends in great degree (upon the sudden cooling of the can and consequent termination of the cooking step, the method has not been found so satisfactory.
In cooking peas and the likeit is the custom to immerse the cans in cool or cold water as soon as they are received from the cooking chamber, insuflicient time being given to apply the coating of lacquer.
It is a purpose of this invention to pro- "vide means for hermetically sealing the can during the cooking or processing operation so that it will not be necessary to wait until after the can has come from the cookingv chamber. g
It is a principal object of the present invention to provide an improved hermetic seal which automatically applies itself during the processing of a container or can.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a container provided with means for forming a hermetic seal between its body and closure or end, whichiwill require no manipulation by the packer or canner other than scanning the container in the ordinary manner.
Other objects and advantages of theinvention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description when considered in connection with the accompany ing drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawing,
Figure 1 shows a can or container embodying my invention and hermetically sealed;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a can body embodying my invention Fig. 3 is a transverse section of an end or closure for the same; and v Fig. 4 is a partial transverse sectional view showing the closure and an end of the body seamed together.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown it embodied in a can of an ordinary and well known type in which the ends and body are joined by a double seam.
The can body 5 in the present instance is provided with outwardly extending flanged end edges 6 of the ordinary type adapted to be turned over, aS seen in Fig. 4, in forming the double seam. On the under side of these flanges and extending longitudinally of the body is painted or otherwise provided a film or coating 7 of some gummy material adapted to expand and soften under heat. The extent of this film or coating is preferably such that When the seam is formed the coating will terminate at or about the seam, as seen at 8 in Fig. 4. The cover or end 9 in the present instance is provided with an outwardly extending flange 1O turned down slightly at its edges 11 in the ordinary manmanifest, as the invention is better under-.
stood, that either the film 7 or the film 13 Patented Mar. 2, 1920.
may be omitted. Films 7 and 13, after being placed on the can, are permittedto dry and they form little more than a coat of lacquer of the ordinary thickness in their dried condition. When the can is seamed it will be noted that the coating 7 on the can body is brought Opposite the adjacent surfaces, of the cover and the coating 13, if used, is brought opposite the adjacent surface of the can body. These coatings are provided and are substantially, dried before the ends are secured to the body and they may be provided, if desired,'on the blanks before the ends or body are formed. When the can has been seamed and is hot from processing or. in processing, the lacquer softens and 1 swells andforms a film adhering to the adend to the can body at the can factory and jac'ent surfaces of the body and cover to form a hermetic seal.
In practice it 1s customary to secure one to supply the other end'free of the can to subsequently be positioned and attachedby A as the packer or canner.
Where cans are provided embodying my invention one end may-be completely sealed in the manner described and the can furnished'with a lacquer coating or film at the other end of the canbody or on the outer surfaceof the otherend closure or both, it onlybeing. necessary for the canner or packer to fill the can with its contents and process itin the usual manner, the resulting product being hermetically sealed without the necessity of subsequently lacquering the can in the manner earlier described. A can embodying my invention filled and sealed in proper manner will hide completely the lacquer film and an article more pleasing in appearanceis thereby produced than is possible where the lacquer is painted over the seamed edge after processing.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages-will be understood fromthe foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made inthe form, construction and ar- 'rangement of the parts without departing from the spirit andscope of the invention or sacrificing any .of its material advantages, the form herein described being .merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I do not claim herein the method which is described, thesame being the subject of my application Serial No. 88,503, filed April 3-,- .1916.
I claim: 5
LA flanged container body provided on' the underside of its flange with a dried film of gummy material, and also provided on its vertical sides adjacent said flange with a dried film of said material; and a flanged cover provided with a packing material on the under side of the-flange, and
also provided with a dried film of said gummy material on that portion of the top of its flange which is brought into contact with the said film of gummy material "on the vertical sides of the can when the cover is double seamed to thecan.
, 2. A container body provided adjacent its end edges with a dried film of gummy material adapted to expand under heat and to adhere to the edges of a closure subsequently fixed in place. and to form a hermetic seal therewith, said film extending over the outer surface of the vertical portion of said body adapted to contact with said cover.
3. A container comprising a body and an end closure" having adjoining edges adapted to be seamed together, a dried film of gummy material on a vertical portion of the body which contacts with the cover in s'eaming, said film being expandible under heat to be seamed together, and dried films of gummy material on both of the opposed portions of said body and cover which contact in seaming, said films being expandible under heat and adapted to adhere together to form a hermetic seal.
6. A container comprising a body and an end closure having adjoining edges adapted to be secured together, and a coatin of lacquer ona vertical portion of the which contacts with the cover in seaming.
7. A flanged can body for a double seam closure, the same being provided on its vertical sides, which are not bent into the double seam butv which are engaged by the 4 top parts of the cover when the double seam is formed, with a dried film of gummy seal;
ing materiaL. n
8. A flanged can cover for a double seam vclosure, the same being provided on its top side near its edge, with a dried film of gummy sealing material which is adapted to be brought into tight contact with the vertical sides of the can, when the double seam is formed.
Signed this 25th day of August,- 1914, in the presence of two witnesses. 4 JOHN G. HODGSON'.
