FENCE-POST.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom "it may concern: I
Be it known that we, JOSEPH Boo'ri-r SKIFF and CHARLES JACOB WVESTPHALL, citizens of the United States, the former residing at Clinton, in the county of Clinton and State of Iowa, and the latter residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in fence posts, the object being to provide a metal post with means for anchoring the same whereby the post can be placed in the desired position and secured without digging a hole to receive the same.
Another object of our invention is to provide a post with an anger which is adapted to be forced into the ground in such a manner that the post will be held firmly without any danger of yielding 'in any way when subjected to any great strain.
Another object of our invention is to pro vide a post proper with a depending bar carrying an anger forming a shank for the auger, on which is slidably mounted a sec-- ond auger having the same pitch as the fixed auger, so that the angers will travel in the same path when being forced into the ground, and by this construction the upper auger can be adjusted so that the same will embed itself in the ground any distance desired.
A still further object of our invention is to provide a post having wire receiving members, whereby the fence wire can be readily attached thereto, or removed therefrom.
WVith these objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved fence posts. Fig. 2 is a detail vertical section. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. A is a section taken on line L-A of Fig. 1. And Fig. 5 is a top plan view of a modified form of post proper.
In carrying out our invention we employ a semi-circular body A, which forms the post proper, and is preferably formed of some suitable sheet metal having side flanges A', A the flanges A being provided with integral depending tongues B formed by pushing the same outwardly from the flanges, and the flange A is provided with similar shaped tongues C oppositely arranged in such a manner that when one of the fence wires are forced under the opposing tongues, and the tongues bent downwardly on the same, the wire will be held in such a manner that it cannot move up or down.
The body A is provided with lugs D eX- tending downwardly from its bottom adapted to be secured in openings formed in the disk shaped base F, which is provided with a central upwardly projecting portion having a threaded bore in which is secured the threaded upper end G of a shank G, by nuts as clearly shown so as to securely fasten the shank to the disk. The lower end of the shank G, is pointed as shown at G and fixed on the shank adjacent the point is an auger H comprising a pair of blades arranged in such a manner that when the shank is turned they will embed themselves in the ground so as to securely lock the shank therein. The shank is preferably formed square on which is slidably mounted the hub I of an auger I, having similar shaped blades of the same pitch as the auger H, so that the blades will travel in the path of the blades of the auger II when the same is forced into the ground, and by forming the hub with a square opening to receive the shank, the auger I will be rotated when the shank is rotated. By mounting the auger I on the shank in this manner the same can be moved up and down so as to adjust the same in order to cause the auger to embed itself into the ground the desired distance.
In the modification shown in Fig. 5, We show a post J, having a body formed of two sections bolted together as clearly shown.
What we claim is:
l. A fence post comprising a semi-circular body provided with a base, a shank carried by said base and a fixed, and a movable auger carried by said shank.
2. A. fence post comprising a base, a post proper mounted on said base, a shank fixed to said base provided with a pointed end, an anger fixed on said shank, and a second auger slidably mounted on said shank.
A fence comprising a base, provided with openings, a semi-circular shaped post provided with lugs adapted to be secured in said opening, a shank carried by said base, and a fixed and a movable auger mounted. upon said shank having the same pitch.
