Be it known that we, ALBERT F. Mann and JOHN RUHL, citizens of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Stovepipe Cleaner and Damper, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to combined cleaners and dampers for stove-pipes, and particularly for horizontal pipe entering a chimney; and the object of our invention is to provide a simple and practical device for this purpose.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, which are part hereof and in which similar characters of reference indicate the corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the end of the pipe, the skeleton attachment, and the movable parts therein; Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the movable disk; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation, partly in section, showing our invention in place in a pipe and chimney.
The essence of the invention, as shown in Fig. 1, consists of a short piece of pipe 1, to which is attached a skeleton extension of the same size, composed preferably of the wires 2 and 3. These wires are fastened at each of their ends to the edge 'of the pipe and are preferably arched in opposite direct-ions in the middle of their end portions so as to support each other and stiffen the skeleton. The great advantage of this structure is that it can be inserted readily in any chimney, extending part way through the walls, and
- -serve to control a cleaner and damper and also to control the horizontal line of stovepipe and keep it from being pushed into the chimney too far.
In the pipe 1 and its skeleton extension is set the disk 4:, which is of practically the same diameter as the inside of the pipe 1 The disk 1 is held in position by the rod 5 which is attached thereto by the nuts 6 and 7. The annular edge of the disk is preferably circular in cross-section so that it will slip easily at all points and not catch on the edge of the pipe 1. The rod 5 is preferably bent at its outer end into the form of a ring, to provide a handle, and is supported in an opening in a bend of the stove-pipe.
It is evident that by maintaining the disk at the same elevation by means of the skeleton extension, greatdelicacy of adjustment is possible in placing the disk just outside the end ofthe pipe 1 at varying distances to serve as a damper.
We do not limit ourselves to the exact form in which our invention is herein disclosed further than is indicated in the claims which follow.
We claim: i
1. In combination with a chimney, a
stove-pipe, a damper and a scraper elementtherein, and a unit of pipe provided with an extension; said extension being closed at'the end, open at the top and bottom, adapted to contain on all sides and to support in any position said damper and" scraper element, and adapted to hold said unit in the wall of the chimney against injection into the flues thereof.
2. In combination With a chimney, a stove-pipe, a damper and a scraper element therein, and a unit of pipe provided with a skeleton extension, comprising two wires each fastened at each end to the edge of said unit, each formed approximately in the form of three sides of a rectangle, the middle side of each being arched near its middle to enable the wires to support each other; said extension being adapted to contain and to hold in any position said damper and scraper element.
