To all whom it'may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM. DALTON, of Schneclady, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Steam-Boiler Superheaters, of which improvement the following is a specification.
My invention more particularly relates to steam boiler super-heaters of the lire tube type, and its object is to rovide means for connecting the pipes within which the steam is superheated, with the saturated steam supply and superheated steam delivery pipes, which shal be simple and inexpensive structurally, readily applicable in connection with other elements of superheaters of different. classes, and exempt from the structural and operative objections which have been developed in headers of various constructions heretofore (assayed in practical service.
The improvement claimed is hereinafter fully set forth.

My invention is herein exemplified in connection with a locomotive boiler, 4, having a plurality of fire tubes, 4. extending, in the usual manner. from a firebox at its rear end (which is not shown) to a smoke boir, 4", connected to its front end, and supported on cylinder saddles, 12. The products of combustion passing from the tubes to the smoke box are discharged therefrom through a stack, 4", having an inward extension or penetration, 4". In superheaters as known and constructed prior to my invention, the pipes which supply saturated steam from the boiler, are ordinarily, if not invariably, connected to those which deliver superheated steam to the. cylinders, through the intcrmediation oi. socallcd headers, which are cast metal members, of various forms and locations, trans mitting steam from the supply pipes to the superheater pipes and from the superheater pi es to the delivery steam pipes.

' In the practice of my invention, I provide for the performance of the functions of the headers of prior snperheaters, a connection casing, 70, which is a shell or box, composed of wrought plate metal, as steel or iron, of
.the character of ordinary boiler plate, and
' to the branch steam or delivery pipes, 63.
As shown in Figs. 1, 3, 4, and 9, each of the shell plates of the connection casing is dished or pressed into channel form in section, and is flanged outwardly on its periphery, and the two lates are secured tightly ,together, on opposite sides of the interposed diaphragm, 70, by riveting or welding.
In the form shown in lig. 5, only one of the shell plates is dished or bent into channel form in section and flanged, and the diaphragm is also dished or peri herally flanged and riveted or welded to it, after which it is similarly secured to the other shell plate which isflat throughout.
Fig. 8 shows the shell plates and diaphragm as united by welding, each of the shell plates being dished 'or pressed into channel form'in section, but none of the plates being peripherally flanged.

It will, however, be obvious that my invention is applicable, without variation of structural or operative principle, in superheaters of the type in wh1ch the supply and delivery steam pipes and superheating pipes are connectedto substantially vertical headers, of the smoke box, as in Letters Patent of the United States No. 875,895, granted and issued to F. J. Cole, under date of January '7, 1908. In such case, the connection casing would be changed in contour only, as required by its v tively to the breeching pipe and branch steam pi es, and the conse uent diflerent location 0 its connections with said members, but would conform in all essential structural articulars with that which is specifically erein shown and described.

Inasmuch as the form of the connection casing, and its position relatively to other members of a superheating appliance in which it is applied, may be .varied in sundry particulars, in accordance with the conditions of application, in the discretion of a constructor skilled in the art, without departure from the spirit and operative principle of my invention, I do'not limit my claims thereto to the specific embodiment herein described and shown, but include therein all structural modifications thereof which embody the essential and character.-

In a steam boiler supcrheater, the combination, with a connection casing substantially as herein set forth, of return bend supcrheziter pipes communicating at their ends with the chambers of the casing, yokes bearing on collurs on said superheater pipes, bolts passing through the connection'casin and through said yokes, nuts engaging sai bolts and clamping the superheater pipes to seats on the connection casing, and diametrically divided collets interposed between the yokes and the collars of the superheating n es. l 10. In a steam boiler superheater, the combination, with a connection casing, substantially as herein set forth, of a breeching pipe having forked end portions registering with steam inlets in one chamber of the casing, brunch delivery steam pipes registering with steam outlets in the other chamber of the casing, and bolts assing through the casing and securing the reechmg pipe and branch deliver steam pipes to opposite sides thereof.
11. n a steam boiler superheater connection casing, the combination of two wrought metal casing sheets, one at least of which is dished or pressed into channel form. in transverse section, and an intermediate diaphragm sheet,.sa1d casing and diaphragm sheets being secured toget r on their edges and formin a two chambered shell or casing which s centrally recessed at front to clear a smoke stack, and is provided with two steam inlet openings on one of its sides, and two steam outlet openings on its 0 posite side, said openings bein dispose pairs on opposite sides of its front recess.
