To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM DALTON,,O Schenectady, in thecounty of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Steam- Boiler Sinner-heaters, of which improvement the following is a specification.
My present invention is an improvement on that for which Letters Patent of the United States No. 997,4:40, were granted and issued to me under date of July 11, 1911, and its object is to provide a wrought metal connection. casing which will afford ready access to the pipe joints formed therewith after installation. in a locomotive smoke box, and tit compactly within the segmental space therein in which it is to be located; to provide a more etiective and reliable connection between the ends of the superheater pipes and the casing; and to avoid the necessity of variation of length in said pipes in connecting them to the casing.
The improvement claimed is hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal central section through the upper portion of the forward end of a locomotive boiler, illustrating an application of my invention; Fig. 2, a veron the line a a of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a similar section on an enlarged scale, through aportion of the connection casing, on the line 7) l) of Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention, I provide, in Letters Patent No. 997,440 aforesaid, a connection casing, 70, which is a shell or box, composed of wrought plate metal, as
. steel or iron, of; the character of ordinary boiler plate, and comprises twov shell plates, connected by riveting or welding. The connection casing is divided, by a diaphragm or partition. into a saturated steam chamber and a superheated steam chamber, the former having saturated steam inlets or openings connected to forks or branches at the front and sides of the T head or breeching pipe, and the latter having superheated steam outlets connected to the branch steam or delivery pipes, (33. ends of the lines of superheater pipes, 69, which extend in the superheating tubes, 67, are secured to the connection casing as hereinafter described.

as shown, curved, in substantial correspondence with the curvature of the smoke box, i of the locomotive boiler in which the casing is located, and are extended below the lower shell plate, the end portions of which are correspondingly downwardly curved, and are secured to the upper shell plate, either by being welded thereto, or, as in the instance shown, by rivets, 70 In prior constructions, difficulty has been experienced in installing a connecting member of suitable length, at a height in the smoke box sufficient to afford the desired space'for the attachment of the superheater pipes and their fastening-s, but by this construction the ends of the connection casing conform to the wall of the smoke box, and may be brought as closely thereto as desired, thereby enabling the casing the full length necessary to receive the superheater pipes of all the superheating tubes, 67,- that can be located transversely in the boiler, and to be located at the proper height above the top row 0t superheating tubes. The end portions of the diaphragm, 70, are downwardly curved, in correspondence with the upper shell plate, to which they are secured, either by welding, or, as in the instance shown, by rivets, 70*. The spacebetween the ends of the lower shell plate a iiords ready access to the fastening members of the superheater tubes, and the ends of the connecting casing abut. on lugs, 4 secured to the smoke box, by wliich the connection casing is supported.
The opposite'ends of the lines ofsuperheater pipes, 69, are, as in Patent No. 997,440 aforesaid, secured to the connection casing through the intermediation of yokes, 71, engaging spherical faced end collars, 69 on the superheater pipes, and connected to the casing, 7 O, by bolts, 72, passing through thimbles, 70, therein. In the construction of said patent, however, as clearly shown in jection is avoided, and more perfect protecto be made of Fig. 13 thereof, the end collars, 69*, of the tion against leakage attained, under my present invention, in which annular reinforcements, 70, are formed in the lower shell plate, around the openings formed therein for the thimbles, 70 and said thimbles are expanded into these reinforcements, so as to stand entirely clear of the outer portion of the lower shell plate, and are, at their opposite ends, expanded into the diaphragm, 70*. The collars, 69 of the adj acent superheater pipes, are seated in annular ground joint bearings, 70", formed in the outer face of the lower shell plate, said bearings being interposed between the lower ends of the thimbles, 70 and the collars, and being similar to the bearings of the opposite ends of the lines of superheater pipes in the lower shell plate. This construction attains the two important advantages in practice, of effectively preventing any leakage that might result from an imperfect joint between the thimble and lower shell. plate, and enabling the collars on both ends of the superheater pipe lines to he made of the same length.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a steam boiler superheater connection casing, the combination of an upper shell plate having a steam inlet, the end portions of said plate beingdownwardly inclined and extended below the plane of attachment of a lower shell plate, a lower shell plate having a steam out-let and correspondingly downwardly inclined end portions secured to those of the upper shell plate, and an interposed diaphragm plate secured to the upper shell plate. 7
2. In a steam boiler superheater connection casing, the combination of an upper shell plate having a steam inlet, the end portions of said plate being bent downwardly in substantial,correspondence with the curvature of a locomotive boiler smoke box for which it is designed, and being extended below the plane oiattachment of a lower shell plate, a lower shell plate having a steam outlet and correspondingly downwardly bent end portions secured to those of the upper shell plate, and an interposed diaphragm plate secured to the upper shell plate.
3. In a steam boiler superheater, the combination of a connection casing comprising an upper shell plate, a lower shell plate, and an interposed diaphragm plate, said lower shell plate having annular ground joint bearings for the reception of superheater pipe connections, and a thimble expanded at one end into the diaphragm plate and at the other end into an annular reinforcement formed in the lower shell plate above and entirely clear of one of the ground joint bearing-s. 7
